Because that's all they could fit in their car, LOL. Go back tomorrow and there will be another three rounds!

I missed your post the first time around.
I’m not sure if it is rounded enough to be blackjack, but there seems to be a lot of variation in leaf shapes, so who knows. In your experience, does fresh cut red oak have the same red oak smell as the kind that has been sitting around a year? Heck, I just assumed that the majority of what I was chopping on was red oak anyways.

Edit, I think you're right with blackjack. Related to the red oak but favored for smoking because of milder flavor. I saw some pictures that were pointier.

Edit, or maybe not... supposed to have much more color in the grain of the wood. Back to who knows?

The leaf shape does vary widely when i looked it up to confirm.

IME yes, sometimes not as strong. Saturday i cut some one year old blown over red oak and it smelled the same as the fresh "green and clean" stuff i cut yesterday....new thread shortly.

Do y'all have black jack oak up there? That looks like Black oak leaf at first glance to me. BlackJack is a scrub species. I'm not sure of the range on it and I haven't looked it up to see. Black jack has terrible form and holds it's dead limbs really badly.

It sure was splitting easy.. but pretty decent sized rounds for a “scrub species.” It is on the list of naive Maryland trees but maybe a case of a shared common name for different species.

    Quercus marilandica

Haha, we have a pickle guy that shows up at our fairs, but he's not a Mr. pickle he's a Dr. pickel and they certainly aren't ever free.

Anyway I was off this site for a few days because first it seemed (at least for me) this site was down during the weekend and I couldn't get on it, then I had gotten involved in other things, but damm just a few days and look at all you busy beavers!!! Nice work everyone!
mrfancyplants I think what you have there is American Elm amongst other wood species in that pile

buZZsaw BRAD Seeing your shirt gave me a chuckle because due to crazy traffic in my area I'm always late for work running into the building screeching in just in time to sign the book:emb:. The kids shout "Run Forest Run!!!!" just about daily. When In class they will ask "Mister, why do I always see you running in the morning?" My answer..."Firstly - because I still can and Secondly- because I care about being late, you should try it" The kids these days never run for anything including the bus as they have this attitude that the world revolves around them and as a group they're too big to fail. You know I think they're probably right about that.:picard:

Black oak is Q. nigra. And yes that's the blackjack I am talking about too. I thought the name was familiar. But it's been over 16 years or so since I too Dendrology so I had to Google it. So does it make a decent tree up there? It's a pretty crappy tree around here. Full of small dead branches and knots. It's found on xeric hilltops or in the sandhill regions.

Shes like the little old Italian grandmother that cooks tons of food just to give away....only with firewood for people that were too busy/stupid to move their oak out of the shadows and into the sun and wind early spring.

I went back for the last round on the way home... I figure if i’m Cutting ‘em in half I might as well strap em all together and cut em in half. I think it is just red oak.

There weren’t more rounds to choose from yet.

The ones in the ‘barrow were from the shorter round. In the stack you can see the color difference separating it from the chestnut oak behind.

making good progress. Is that all the oak or is there more to split? Did the little man help with the stacking or does he only go on hoarding runs?
I like the "stihl" orange tire! I want one for my 'barrow! Mine keeps going flat. Actually need a new entire wheelbarrow.

That is all of that load, although I’m hoping more will show up soon.

Little man does not stack much yet; usually he’ll play with the stomp rocket if I’m mucking about in the yard.

This was an airless tire off Amazon. It does bog down a little when it is packed to the gills, but it still rolls; and doesn’t go all the way flat.. yet.

Nice looking splits mrfancyplants ! Seems like you are stacking on that stone wall due to limited space, but looks to be room behind that pile for more cordage. Is this eventually going to be backfilled with firewood or are you reserving that space for something else?....Perhaps a play space for the little one? Sorry, being that I have a limited yard space for firewood seasoning I notice these things.

I could start a new row or two behind it, but eventually i’d like to put up small retaining walls on each side of the slope so that I could flatten it out in the middle. Probably put in a sandbox, hammock, plant a tree and maybe additional patio space. There is plenty of space to stack, but I am trying to keep the stacks as unobtrusive as possible, which means perimeter stacks for the most part, even if not ideal for the most suns and wind.

Whoops, look like I’ll need a new stack. Maybe i’ll Keep the splits thick and make it a 4yr stack? The first couple splits kind of looked like cherry and there could have been two types, and there was definitely oak of some sort. It didn’t smell or look like red oak so far, but maybe by the time I get it home I’ll change my mind.
Enough supply that I could be picky for 16” splits for once. The struts were saving with just the trunk full. I might go back for the cherry branch bundles. Someone is really hooking up the dump.

Nice. Get all that. I see cherry, white and red oak. Not all red oak stinks. Pin oak does though.

Awesome... which pile looks like the white oak? Or is it split in the trunk already (hopefully). White oak would be perfect for my four year stack of all-nighters.
