Saw this tree at a house I was working at today. FIL and I couldn't id it. Sorry for the bad pics. Lakeside in Maine.
Are the leaves rough feeling or velvety feeling? Mulberry maybe. Where is this? Those sure aren't mulberries though? Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk
The leaves and berries say basswood, aka Linden. Cut one down in my woods last March and didnt know what it was then. See my thread "Stumped" on ID? The stump sprouted new saplings and ill check the leaves tomorrow and get back to you.
Basswood We had a few on our property when I was a kid. A couple of them were HUGE. Dad scoffed at the thought of wasting time to cut them down for firewood since we had lots of ironwood and shagbark hickory there. I'm surprised at the BTU chart. Maybe that's because all of ours were hollow and pretty punky for the most part. I didn't think it would have that many BTU... Still learning something everyday.
Leaves to me say basswood too. We just have so few of them I couldn't say for sure, and I didn't realize they had berries like that? Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk
I should also mention to those finding this later and may not know that mulberry bark also looks nothing like that! It's dark and furrowed. Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk
Thanks for the tips all Some research seems to prove Linden. Also found out that the leaves are edible like lettuce. Not sure I'll try it or not
i just snapped these two pics of the stump with saplings. Leaves were bug eaten (guess they are edible, but im not trying). The one full leaf does match yours. Some leaves are huge. Could you get an idea of leaf size MaineMtnMan ?
i saw that myself. The only time i can say ive ever encountered one so maybe it varies depending on tree size, location, variety etc. Only time ive cut it too. I "cheated " and looked it up prior to my first post as i suspected it was basswood.
