Ash is so much easier to hand split. I’ve been recently trying to handsplit what I think is hickory which has been a nightmare.
Yeah it is a pain didn’t know how tough it was when I picked it up in the spring. It’s taken a lot of wedges and a sledge to get it to split.
Yeah I’m excited for when I finally get it seasoned enough to burn. I heard it’s well worth the effort!
Hickory dries pretty quick and burns hot. I have quite a bit to burn this year. I have a lot of ash as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
the grain and wood texture remind me of green (variety, not fresh cut) ash and not hickory. It can be very tough to hand split 1985ew. Check the rounds to see if they have the center pith then its definitely ash. Pic is of some it fresh cut i scored at the dump earlier this Summer. Had to sledge and wedge it in half.
I only have 3 more logs left of that I’ll try to get some more pics of the bark and rounds. All I know is it is impossible to split by hand and is incredibly heavy. Also, during the spring I had a bunch of hickory bark beetles on it.
Wish we had more of it around here. There are about a dozen trees at UMass in the lot I park in, all have signs about the beetle on them. If seen, kill lol
