Thanks, folks. I might have it bad. I finished another stack with free walnut from a lady down the road. There's a lot more there, plus at least three more windfalls from last spring's storm here.

At least, this is cheaper than other hobbies. [IMG]

Well, it is until folks on this site starting talking saws, splitters, trailers and more saws and the next thing you know you are a hoarder of all kinds of firewood gathering equipment.

Hello everyone, I’m Brad. I bought a house two years ago outside of Denver in the suburbs. The house came with two wood stoves. The first year I had to buy a couple of cords and the second year I only had to buy one. This year with some help from This site and chasing arborist’s Craigslist free firewood ads the last year and a half, I have hoarded enough firewood to not have to buy any this season.
I primarily only use one stove (Lopi Patriot) to heat the family room (converted sunroom with lots of glass and basically no heat) in the evenings and on weekends.
A little about myself; I Moved to Colorado 20 years ago for the mountains so we ski/snowboard in the winter and camping in the summer. Have one kid. Electrician for work.
I didn’t get a chance for a picture today but attached is the start of my hoarding last year and my view from my recliner as I sit hear tonight typing away. The stove will be burning in a couple of days.

Welcome to the club. Great bunch of folks here sharing knowledge and humor. Glad to have you on board. Looks like your hoard is in nice shape. Nice looking hearth and stove. Looks like pup has already claimed a spot next to it. What kind is the other stove? Would it heat the other part of the house or just using wood as supplemental heat?

Hi Brad! Glad to have you on board! Interesting that free wood is plentiful in Colorado, do you get mostly softwood? I would think you'd have lots of competition for scrounges, but maybe supply is greater than demand?

The other stove is an old Olympic insert. It’s on the end of the house in the dining room not far from the Lopo. It will cook you out of the dining room so I’ll only fire it up on the coldest of nights.
We’ll see how Bauer(the pup) likes the stove this winter. He’s a Pyrenees so he might prefer a snow drift over a heat source. We’ve only had him since July, so we’ll see.

There’s plenty of pine and aspen in the mountains to cut or scrounge. Still millions of acres of beetle kill. But that’s too much work. Nobody has to advertise to give away rounds in the mountains. Too many neighbors up there have stoves and will gladly take any wood from a neighbor.
In the front range you have to pay attention and be quick for the good stuff. I see Honey Locust and silver maple often but it goes quick, within an hour or two sometimes. Elm and cottonwood is normal to see but doesn’t go as quick. I’ve only scored ash once and that produced a face cord at best. Have never seen hickory, walnut or oak for scrounging. At $400 a cord C/S, the arborists know a processor will throw them a bone. Nor do those trees do well here.
My best score was a Honey Locust a year and a half ago. I got almost all of the tree. The attached picture produced loads 3 &4. Finally close to being seasoned although some pieces are still metering 40%.
The other pic is of my current pipeline. (Also have a couple other rows of softwood for this winter not shown.

That is a HUGE honey locust! It was a yard tree apparently, no thorns? We have honey locust here in NH strictly as on ornamental street tree. They are all still small, recently planted. Black locust grows wild. I have had good luck drying honey locust splits next to the stove, it doesn't take long.
