Looks a tad light duty for EF4 & up tornado, but otherwise it should hold.Looking good bear 1998 ! Hope it takes care of the draft issue.
Had off today....so i sealed my chimney crown....time will tell..... Theres some kind of sealant where theres a void in the upper left hand corner of the last pic....i hope all is good.... Within the next 2 weeks i wanna see if the block off plate fits that i had made up... After that... waitin to torch some wood.
Apologies, I don't know the history prior to this post. Is the metal chimney pipe running all the way down inside the old terra cotta flue or you just added on to the terra cotta flue liner with the class A pipe? Also, what is that small hole in the crown right next to the main flue?
Stainless insulated liner from stove to transition plate...... The hole is another small flue for our fuel oil foiced air furnace....
Ahh. Good. Didn't want to make assumptions but I was terrified you just added on to the terra cotta flue liner with the class A pipe thinking "there, I fixed it".. The fact nobody else said anything told me I didn't know the hole story but I've seen some interesting "repairs" over the years. What is this though?
Looks really small for an oil fired furnace. Or is the original fireplace one extra large and the perspective makes it look small? You'll want to extend that to stick up a few inches above the crown otherwise you're going to get water in your furnace.
Big flue is 13 x 13....furnace flue is abott 8 x 8....thought about some sort of rain ca....the chimney has been like that for 38 years.
That is weird that they didn't bring that second flue up proud of the crown...me personally, I would want a cap over that second flue...just to keep excess rain out, water is the enemy of your house. I'd prolly use a screened cap...keep the squirrels out, unless you want them to come in...
I was just lookin at some 8x8 caps...i see they have kits to allow the caps to be attached on the inside of the flue. Would like to find one already together...but no luck. If i do put one on....i may have to alter it so its fairly level.....the crown tapers there. I dont want to chisel any of the cap away....any suggestions??
Maybe tapcon 4 pieces of stainless flat stock ("straps"), 1 in each corner of the flue, standing straight up (IIRC you said its bare brick?) ...then bolt the cap to that with SS bolts?
Yeah, there ya go...don't know why that wouldn't work. Could still run a tapcon or two through the legs if'n it seems like it needs it...or even a fat dab of Urethane adhesive under each leg (or whatever that stuff is that they use on landscape rocks, etc)
The lack of a rain cap is much smaller issue to the problem. Don't get me wrong, they are a good thing to have but the bigger problem is there is no curb to keep water running down the slope of the crown, from running right into the flue, just like the curb in the street keeping the storm water coming down your driveway. There should be a few inches of terra cotta sticking up above the crown, just like the old fireplace on next to it. A small angle grinder with a diamond blade is what I would use to just cut around the perimeter of the 8x8. Then remove the top section of 8x8 and replace it with a longer one or if it is a full length piece, cut six or seven inches off it, put it back and put another new section on top, with refractory cement in the joint of course. Then the rain cap just drops over nice and easy. Now the part you probably don't want to hear. If that has been that way for 38 years, you really should have a professional take a look at the entire flue and the heat exchanger of your furnace. Building inspection & consulting is my profession. Walking up to that on a roof, I would fully expect to find several frightening things below. Don't mean to throw a pile of $*%# on you but Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is serious stuff.
Installed block off plate today....only 1 pic....i wanted to keep movin...took me 2 1/2 hrs. from start to finish....
