Red oak variety, mystree #1

    These were from a red oak variety that i scored today. I stepped on an acorn and couldnt believe the size. Cant say ive ever seen one like this before.
    I picked up several of the acorns in the street gutter. the quarter is for scale. IMG_0914.JPG

    Luckily there was a limb with an acorn still attached. Okay FHC folks what is it?

    My first thought was burr oak. Beautiful acorns you have there!

    There are a lot of different looking burr oak acorns.

    Burr oak is a white oak. This is clearly red oak.

    I would say either Black or Scarlet oak.

    After a bit more research re: billb3 and mr.finn 's suggestion, I'll amend my vote to Black Oak.

    :rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol:I did (first sentence of thread) and didnt think to take pics of the bark. I couldnt cut on site and only took lengths of smaller stuff. Ill get some today.

    I had though pin, but the leaves arent as "dainty" as most ive seen although they are on the small side. The acorns are what threw me obviously. Never seen em like that before. Ill get more pics today of bark.

    Black oak leaves can look similar to pin oak and I do think you have a black oak there.
