looking for your professional opinions. Red oak or white?
Toying with the idea of splitting some of that trunk for a bridge.

    I'd say white.

All the red oak I've cut (and I cut a lot) has been very obviously RED. That doesn't look red to me.

The heartwood of red oak usually has a little bit of a red tint to it around here and the white oak heartwood usually has a bit of a grey tint to it. Plus the white oak fresh cut or split will often smell a bit like vanilla.
The bark on the red oak is usually grey-ish and the white oak rather white-ish.

The Spring leaf buds/emerging leafs on red oak are white-ish green and the leaf buds /emerging leafs on white oak are red-ish.

To me the wood, at least on the trunk looks like WO. The bark on the other hand looks like red.
Maybe it’s a hybrid cross pollinated red headed step child. :)

A beech tree and a birch tree are arguing about who fathered the sapling growing between them. "its a son of a birch", "no, its a son of a beech"...on and on they go. Finally a bird lands nearby and they ask it to determine the species for them as they obviously cant move. The bird proceeds to tap at the bark for a bit and stops.
"Well, what is it"? ask the trees
"thats the finest piece of ash ive ever tapped my pecker into" replies the wood pecker!!!
I wish i could take credit for that one but huskihl posted it a while back. Thanks Kevin! Sorry if i butchered it at all!
Joe, the bark looks like red oak, but end of log looks like white IMO. Did it smell like whiskey? If so its white oak...but im not a professional. Never got a PHD in wood

I know. Same thoughts here. then I started to scan the pics for leaves. I think red, because I swear I saw some pointy leaves.

That’s a goodun Brad. I think you did it justice. :)
Just a pic off the web. No scratch and sniff. Fresh score in Deep River. Too far even for me but I’ll be driving right by tomorrow. Was thinking maybe I should tow the trailer along and be armed with chainsaws. Got a little excited by the growth crack right up the middle there, easy splitting. No sapling jokes implied.

It’s occured to me if I were to lose my orientation just a bit there’s some WO gypsy kill just a few feet over my property line into the state forest. Everyone gets lost every once in awhile.
    Thanks for the replies folks.

I'd say white. Any red I've got was always very pink/red on the inside, especially when split. Even the dead ones.

Looks like a red oak variety to me, the end will fade after being cut for a bit. If you can find some WO, would be great for the bridge, due to it's rot resistance.
