Honey Locust? Some kind of Maple? Looks vaguely familiar but I really have no clue. I don't think it's Crottonwood...go ahead and take 'er down so we can get some split pics.
Just looking at it up close I dont think it's honey locust or a maple. I did trim a couple branches at noon and took a picture that I will posts in a little while.
Bark sure looks like a shagbark, but I have never seen one look like the structure that that tree does. Gary
Smell it. Havent seen much, but looks a little like Peach. Its definitely not Pear though,Pear bark isn't that scaly & the rings are almost indistinct, even less than Apple.Plus Pear is lighter colored, pinkish brown to rosy cream heartwood. Bark is different than Eastern Redbud also, though the wood is similar in appearance.
In over 30 years I've never seen any Shagbark that looked like that,in several Midwestern states either.
I am at a loss as to what this is but I agree that it doesn't quite look like shagbark. I have a bunch of shagbark hickories and the bark is more scaly.
At first glance I thought Shagbark, but after a second look it doesn't. Now that you added a picture of the cut wood it certainly isn't Shagbark. I don't know what it is though. Are there any other specimens nearby that are alive?
I was able to get back to this tree. Took it all down and although all the branches were without buds or leaves there were a few leaves growing from the trunk. I also noticed the wood smelled nice...almost like Cedar. Does this help any in getting an ID?
Alternating leaves that look like "Sweet Bay, Tupelo, or Umbrella Tree" leaves, but I'm not sure that's it. Bark is weird though, looks like Crack or White Willow bark. Definitely not hickory.
