Do y’all have any idea what kind of tree this was. The leaves are all that was on it it was dead. My FIL said he thought it was locust but I don’t know.
Looks like BL to me. Color of the wood says that cuts not fresh,,,had at least a week in the sun. Usually pale green when fresh.
What’s the biggest y’all have seen. I sure didn’t think it got this big. My 20inch bar didn’t cut all the thru the big rounds.
They can get pretty big. First BL tree/trunk I ever saw was on the side of a busy roadway. State had cleared and removed a lot of it but that one log sat for weeks. I’d say the butt was 36” maybe more. I wanted that trunk real bad but there’s more police on that section of road than actual motorists.
That wood sucks... but seeing as you live in Tennessee and I’m right up the road in SW Virginia, I’ll come help you get rid of it... (Will I need to bring my trailer?) Great btu’s right there BC
Like Brad said, Black Gold I’ve scrounged a bit but have only burned a few bits and pieces I cooked next to the stove. Which means I have virtually zero experience with it. The oldtimers claim you can melt a stove with it. Let assume that’s just a way of saying it burns hot. My BIL burns a bit of it. Fence guy. He gets the old fence posts and rails. Beyond that he doesn’t know much about it. I have noticed his little pot belly throws a lot of heat with just a few coals in it. Seems to me it doesn’t burn crazy hot when burning,,BUT when it’s in coaling stage it cranks into second gear unlike most woods. Anyone with experience care to chime in on my newbie observation? Yea or nay?
I find that once it’s engaged it does the job nicely, and coaling is totally unlike any other hard wood. IMO, the best overall firewood. I actually prefer it to be dead/down/barkless as it semi petrifies, and that’s what seems to do the stove best heat wise.
I havent cut a whole lot of it Buttercup but had a good sized trunk back in February. The seem to have odd shaped trunks from my observations.
well bud about 80 90 percent of what i've cut up has been the size of the stuff in your pics and about percen been a weebit smaller with rare few bein about 30 inch or so
