Been a busy month or so here, cut down several big yard trees last weekend and ended up with huge sycamore and oak rounds from the job. Gave all the sycamore to a buddy of mine (two huge loads), kept the oak to replace some of what we burned last winter. Here's some of those big rounds that I started busting up today. One of two huge loads of sycamore we delivered from the one big tree The ol' "Pap Steer" earned his dinner today! There was a total of 8 of these big rounds, I got the knottiest of them split up today.... Have a Blessed Easter everyone and remember The Reason for The Season!!
I believe the skid steer and you both earned your dinner. That's some big rounds. Equipment does it it easier
Big stuff there! I would not be able to handle those any more and never did like it so have done very few and those were long ago. I wonder why you gave away all that beautiful sycamore?
Dad has a small Bobcat about that size...sure is handy...small but mighty! I have a little sycamore in the stacks, but haven't burnt much yet...don't know how it'll be. Happy Easter y'all!
I burnt a lot of 3 years seasoned sycamore winter of 24-25 and I'd burn more without a second thought. I've heard the negative stories but that was not my experience. Now those big oak rounds look fine for sure.
A very close friend of ours is going through a second bout of cancer and he burns wood. I delivered a big load of oak logs to him in October and saw his pile was getting small, so he got both loads of that sycamore and we are already setting up a surprise visit to his place to process that wood for him in a month or so. I'll do a post when we do that work.
That little skiddie earns his keep around here for sure. Rarely do we take on a tree job without him in tow!
They sure were solid (and heavy), but some were really knotty! Ended up with lots of uglies from two rounds but they'll still burn nice
Some nice splits to come from those. Good on you Scotty helping your friend. Ive come to the conclusion that big rounds are a no more for me after my recent cuttings. If its all I've got to cut then yes, but I ain't getting any younger! No equipment other than chain saws used. Yes they do produce a lot of nice splits, but I'm way more productive with Goldilocks rounds. See my "cabin fever" thread as I cut some big cottonwood last week and the time and effort was far greater than my cut of smaller cherry logs the week before.
No shame in that my friend. Being I'm getting rid of these trees from our jobsite anyway, I make use of em. Now if it was a lesser wood, honestly they'd end up at the compost yard. But when it's maple, ash, hickory, oak or locust, I'm keeping them.....lol. We had a discussion at the jobsite where these particular rounds came from that we don't know how we did this work on huge yard trees without that little skidsteer. It's a back/time/life saver. For dragging large bundles of brush to the trailer or chipper, loading logs and cleaning up. It has its downside also (can tear up wet yards), but we make sure the homeowner understands the ramifications of the scope of the job before we bring it.
