This is the the old door laying on the hole.

Could do regular concealed hinges to the underside. Mite be tough with such limited work space tho. Getting the 35mm Forstner bit to hit correctly would be the biggest challenge...

    Papadave isn't teasing, you know.
Why don't you just make it a trap door that once it's needed, you just remove it completely? DH won't have to monkey with hinges and cutting the floor, easy fix; just as good looking! Chances are, the door already has door stops on the inside to prevent it from "overclosing"?

I've crawled through too many doors like that in order to work in crawl spaces. The ones with the hinges and door hanging over you is just there waiting to al-ka-bong you when it falls!

wildwest , ours has a low profile piano hinge, and on the side opposite the hinge, instead of a handle, there's a 1/2" hole with a rope through it.
There's a bolt tied on the crawl side to pull it down when closed, and a small knot on the top side which sits down in the hole....mostly.

Yes, you can remove the ring but ask yourself this first. Just how hard will the door be to remove once the grab ring is removed and what kind of damage will you inflict on the new floor trying to get the door open again?
It's not uncommon to see those grab/lift rings exposed. Could always put down an area rug if the sight of it eats at you??

Or use something similar to this so the trap door "pops up" for an easier way to grab it and remove/open...
The brown piece to the right....

Would help keep all kinds of detritus from collecting in the recess too.

I talked to loon on the pet thread a few months ago, we need rugs in that area because its the exit entry for the dogs and the yard after the new septic will be extra muddy this year. Perfect!!
