Hello, I scored a big bunch of wood. There were a couple of big logs that I thought were some kind of oak. I started splitting this wood & Jiminy Flippin' Cricket; it is stringy! It was horrible to split!! The bark is very thick and the rounds are extra heavy. Does anyone know what this wood is?
I’m seeing oak myself. I’ve come across some very stringy specimens, mostly white but some red oaks too occasionally.
I’d say some species of oak. I have seen many kinds. Some are stringy and some pop right open. We just split up a pile of oak and there were at least 3, maybe 4, different kinds of red? oak in the pile. Some lighter color and some darker color, slightly different grain and smell. The one kind would have made beautiful cabinets with the grain and color and the way it split. You never know what you are getting with oak until you open it up.
I'm seeing more hickory than oak. That thick, hard bark and light colored wood. Also the grain where it's split should have the medullary rays showing.
I've never come across oak like this! Every split was a chore & the hatchet was needed a lot to cut tbe chunks apart. Hickory? As I mentioned the bark is very thick and it would pop off the splits sometimes. Here's a picture showing a couple of the mystery oak with a piece of red oak from yesterday. This wood is noticeably heavier than red oak. The reys are faint .
yeah now I see hickory. Is the bark very hard? Fresh peeled bark chunks will curl up as they dry. Hickory has the toughest bark IME. Buck it in poor lighting and see sparks.
The logs are in the shade & there are enough sparks. Enough sparks at times to make wonder is I'm hitting some light metal,
I cut ironwood once. It threw sparks like a grinder and had me thinking something was wrong with my saw.
