Big Kitties, I don't like them, never have. So the wife and I are at a neighbors house tonight, a nice "Happy hour" with a bunch of the folks who live in this canyon. It was a good time and then I heard the first story about the "Big Kitties". Within the last 3 months- Cats and dogs are missing, and my neighbor- so close I could shoot a hole in his flue pipe (200 yrds)- had a 150lb. Tom just hanging out on his roof this past week. On His Roof! Told me he didn't have a clear line to shoot without hitting his solar panels. You can guess what I called him. It gets better, turns out there's 2 of them, one mature, one juvenile, both not wanted. And soooo, I'm on the hunt. Anyone deal with this scenario before?
Mountain Lion(s)- plural. I have 2 active ones within a 1 mile radius of my home (just found out about this) ,And one of them is big. HDRock- Locally, we call them "Big Kitties". They are not welcome up here. Their numbers are probably 3X the number reported by the CDW, if not more. I now realize why my Lab. has been reluctant to wander around after dark for the last few weeks.
Wow, thats scary. Good luck on it, hopefully they get eternal sleep before they kill again. Keep us posted.
There has been sightings of some big kitties in Maine, but the fish and games has dismissed them all. My mother told me of seeing one up in the county when she was a kid. She is gone now. I believe she knew what she saw. My labs have had nights they won't go out unless I go out with them. When they do go out it usually isn't long before they sound the alarm that something is out there. We don't wait around to find out what it is. I have seen fishers, coyotes, and bobcat all within a couple hundred feet of the house. Those dogs know darn well that there is something there that normally is not. One of my labs actually points to the direction.
I've heard that too Larry. Surprised a set of bones hasn't been found yet by the thousands of hunters walking in the woods in the fall. Could be that bones were found and thought to be something else? Dunno. I DO know, I don't wanna meet one any time soon.
It is strange. They live a life that allows for little to intrude on them. I've never found remains of bobcat or fishers. Might be they get eaten.
Yup... could be they crawl down into burrows under tree roots or stonewalls and eventually die. Never be found.
I know if I get the chance, no one will know I did. S.S.S is my motto. What's odd is the report of the juvenile. Usually, you get a mature one that has it's territory and kicks the rest out. As long as the deer are around, so are the cats. But Colorado's deer pop. is down this year by quite a bit according to a recent CDW report. And it's not all CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease). There are more big kitties around here than they'll admit. My little "impractical" thing may be a little more practical than I expected.
Love the S.S.S method!! Time to put a camera up! Would love to see pictures of them. Glad all we have here is coyotes but they will walk right up in the yard during the day they arnt even scared of people anymore.
Heh, heh, heh.... Weapon of choice would be a 7.62 mini-gun. ..at least around the house. If I had one.
After reading the entire thread, I think I'd be strapping a sidearm on any walks or work in the woods in the daylight hours. No need to risk your life by not having it with you with so many cats lurking around. And by the sounds of things, they are already semi-domesticated.
big kitty? btw, what's s.s.s.? to me that has always been poop* shower and shave. *worded substituted for the one that begins with "s." they always deny existence here in n.c. m.o. is deny, call people stupid, and claim pictures and videos were doctored. then they claim that it's bobcats killing dogs that are 3 to 5 times bigger than themselves, and coyotes etc.
Sad story. Had to look it up. Here in Maine, it's also considered crazy to think we might have mountain lions here. Same with wolves. All I know is, I sure don't want to meet any of em anytime soon.
