In the spring of 2020 I cut and split a truckload of apple wood from my inlaw's land. Some of the trunk pieces were 14" dia. I just opened a "vein" of it in the face cords I have stacked on my front porch and am burning it now. I forgot how great it smells! I also have some set aside in the garage for the smoker.
Right on! Are you noticing different colors of flames? I have about 2 wheel barrows full of apple that Ive been drying for a number of years that I use for smoke wood in my kamado joe. Ive only been able to have enough for the wood stove a few times since there arent many yard apple trees in our area and definitely no orchards. I wish I had a truck load. Enjoy!
I started this year with about 3/4 of a cord of 2 year old apple. Now I'm down to a little less than half cord and hoping to use most of it up by spring. It does throw some nice blue-purple flames. Seems to go to the coaling stage rather quickly and leaves a notable amount of really fine ash behind. It's hard to beat the smell coming from the chimney though.
If I could have a wish of one hardwood and one softwood in unlimited supply it would be apple and alligator juniper. A man can dream can't he?
Apple does smell fantastic when split. Burns hot too. It's my favorite for the smoker because I've found it most forgiving.
Oh man u lucky duck, if u use wood for cookingor smoking , cut it up in little blocks on miter saw n use it. I have a crab apple I gotta cut up we lost in a snow storm 3 weeks ago.
Apple is amazing firewood, and yes it smells incredible when burning. I save most of mine for the grill or smoker, but I did burn a handful of 7yr old applewood this past fall. The whole neighborhood smelled like a smokehouse.....
