I've gotten black locust twice in my neighborhood, by leaving notes in the homeowners mailboxes. Both times, the trees had been dropped by a tree service, the brush had been removed, but the logs had not yet been picked up by the logging truck. The homeowner owns the wood until it leaves the property, even if he/she has paid a tree service. They were nice enough to let me take it, I don't know if it saved them any money. The first score, I had to argue a bit with the tree service foreman. The second time, they bucked up the logs before I got there. I think it was the same company.
Try calling a few local tree companies or look for job signs in your area. They will put you on a list. The problem is they want a place to dump it and prefer you take it all. I don't have a place to dump that much at once. Time is money for them. How did you get that chain saw bar engraved ReelFaster ? Thought about doing it to one of my bars in memory of my late uncle.
There’s no problem with asking homeowners if they want a downed tree gone. I personally havent had to do it yet but I would. Around my area any trees cut near the road are free to whomever wants them. If the landowner wants them they’re supposed to put a sign on them. That being said I would never yank a tree out of someone’s yard without asking first. Fortunately there’s enough not in people’s yards that I just grab those. Town cut 80 oak trees along one stretch of road last year. I snagged all the trunks and left all the tops for the guys driving Volvo’s LOL You need one of these babies to make roadside scrounging easier and faster. Winch em on, drive em home, dump em and go back for another load.
I asked the guy across the street what was up with him cutting up a down tree a little bit at a time and I've ended up with a big poplar. Maybe there will be something better next time if there is a next time so I'll take it.
That's exactly why I've been kinda hesitant about reaching out. I live in a suburban development, plenty of land and woods out back but cannot get a vehicle back there (at least not currently, 2 giant cedars and oaks are blocking the way). Only option they would have is driveway or street and I am not so sure how crazy they are about that nor my wife or Twp for that matter. I'd have to move quick to get it moved around back. If I can work something out I'd be more then generous with trying to take care of them. I'd love to get a couple nice loads just to put me ahead. Actually Brad my wife helped me with it. She found an engraving place at our local mall. If am not mistaken I think it was called "Things Remembered" I believe they are a chain store but could be mistaken. I called first, they were not sure they could do it and was afraid the bar was too long to fit into their machine. I think that bar I had done was 16".....
Is that a dump trailer? Would really like to see more pics of your setup there if you have them. Is that trailer customized?
I want to ask the neighbor about this one. It’s madrona, basically like Beech that grows in PNW. I don’t know how long its been standing dead but it’s not coming back. I did ask about black locust on a neighbors property already down. He said take it. Only problem was it was already down and chopped into more manageable lengths. I’m leery about taking down trees, not to mention dead ones, and the hardness of these trees is crazy. Sparks fly but being like this standing dead, this wood is hard finding a match for a heat source that grows here. Apple would come close...but it’s way better than that.
...trees won't get you in trouble, like bikinis will... Talk about images burned in your mind, we were on a cruise, big gal about 250# with bright lime green bikini started to get in the small pool we were sitting next to. The bottom slid over to one side like a thong......my eyes, my eyes.
You are correct it is free labor but I do have a story for you. There is a rancher out here that I met in church and became friends with him. Well his mother in law had two huge elm trees dead in her yard and they were afraid they would blow over and fall on the power lines or the house. So I cut them down. Well two years later I was having trouble with my well and this rancher happen to have a well business along with his ranching. Well the bottom line I got my well fixed for free. So even though I was not looking for pay back it came around anyway. You never know.
Yeah it’s a dump. Backyard, shade tree custom. This is the muscle part. My first welding project. There’s a deep cycle battery for the pump already so I just tapped into that. Tried skidding up a ramp at first. Works ok for one lift of logs but getting a second row on top was too much work. Went with the stationary arm in back. Like anything there’s a learning curve but it works great for me. Biggest problem is getting that arm out if you want to go back to normal. I winch it up into a tree. PIA but it works. FWIW the rear pockets which hold the arm have been reinforced too. Was a big worry all that stress would tear that dump bed apart. So far it hasn’t budged.
T.Jeff Veal buZZsaw BRAD Almost forgot the image of the very, very elderly topless sunbather in the Bahamas years ago Tube socks with grapefruits in the bottom With the even more elderly man in a banana hammock giving me the stink eye. Guess he thought I was checking her out. Had a little PDSD after that. Thanks for the reminder guys Everyone else sorry
jo191145, you should be proud, that is a great trailer! Would love to see it in action! I would so love to have a trailer like that. I just missed out on another used dump trailer. I should've jumped quicker, it's gone.
Thanks ReelFaster. My late uncle didn't have any kids was like the grandfather I never had. He bought me my first real saw in 1985 after Hurricane Gloria. He was known as "Big John" and I was considering having that engraved into a bar.
Looks you made out like a bandit with that rig and the oak. I've never seen roadkill that nice or in long lengths either.
My GF and I resemble that remark! we are over 50. Tried sunbathing in my birthday suit once...not a good idea as I got sunburned where it should never see the light of day. Just kidding, but that's funny. Sorry about the flashback JoeinO
