Yes, it is another one of those old wives tales just like pine burning your house down. Don't believe it. Well, yes, you can actually burn anything after it is cut. The real question is, "How will it burn?"

One time we were forced into burning ash, fresh cut. It was terrible, but we did get through the winter; but not without problems. Ash still needs a year to dry right. Even dead ash will appreciate a year in the stack.

Yep, them days are over for me also. Just every once in a great while I will grab the Fiskars and have a go at it. Then silently thank myself for buying a hydraulic splitter.

Part of my stipulation 10 years ago was I had to get a hydro splitter. I remember my dad splitting everything by hand when I was young. I knew it wasn’t for me.

I can’t wait to get some pics tonight of the two standing big ones. Might have to get a rope in the dead one and pull w a come-along. No tractors or power equipment to help. I’ll ask for some opinions too. I think I can fell it but it’s not leaning/weighted the way I want to go. And it has a secondary leader at the base. Think that needs to be removed first. (I’m strategizing in my mind already) Hate to not get the wood, so there has to be a way.

I love hand splitting in the winter, the crack of that frozen wood echoing is so satisfying to my ears. I just cut a giant dead white oak and was splitting the base rounds cuz they were so big. Im going to go take pics of some work iv done the last few days. My boy is always stealing my phone so i havnt got any pics while working.

I got into wood burning via $1 cut all you want permits for pushed over apple orchards. Hand splitting that wood, would suck. Trust me, frozen or not.

Probably similar to splitting elm by hand, elm sucks to split with my log splitter :headbang: im grateful for having alot of hickory on my land but that stuff is also a pain in the azz even with the log splitter but i love heating and cooking with it. :grizz:

Thank you! I’ve had white oak only once before.

Here’s the loaded truck pics. Dad has one of those pappy caps that are extra tall. Still stinks stacking it in there.

He takes everything too. Some of that cut-off stuff I would have thrown in the woods.

We plan to attack these two next time.

    Then the split out oak.

Land owner said we could take this one if we wanted but dad had no interest. Told me it looked like a Catawba tree.

I think i saw that once or twice. My dad would have to pull over and read them to us when we would go out for a Sunday drive when we were kids.

Well, that one bottom round is. :tears: I miss burning all that apple but I sure don’t miss processing the trees. It made the house smell good for days after filling the basement with splits. Haven’t had any in a while. Most of the old trees have been swapped to different varieties.

He had the big white oak dropped for me! :dex:

Looks kinda small in his pic. Told me to go ahead and back right up to it. So, loaded truck pics to come later this evening! Woohoo!
