Im looking Midwinter . Kind of torn between the shore or a mountain lake or river at this point. The shore is getting way too expensive though and crowded so that may be making my decision for me and the only waterfront I can afford there would be on a canal where every parcel is a cookie cutter postage stamp yard with the white pebbles. Yuck!
Problem is I love summer and the water and can get cabin fever and maybe even depressed being socked in during a long cold winter. Firewood and my stove is what I have been using to keep me from going crazy during the winter season (that and I still work). I have no other use or imagination for winter really other than cooking and all things firewood. I am not into winter sports like skiing. Do you think I'm making too much of the winters up there? Do you think the summers there are long enough to provide me with enough vitamin D to get me through the cold season? Right now I'm looking at homes on the water near or on Schroon lake or river area which is near Lake George NY. I love the Spring, summer and fall there, but do you think I can handle the winter?

I think north of Albany gets a bit more snow than we do in southern NH. I hear you about having no use for winter. It is something to be endured. Our winters lately have been mild through December. January through March is the worst part.
I am close enough to the ocean that there is a moderating influence.
The summers up here are great, and I'm sure the Lake George summers more than make up for the cold.

Wow Molly, sounds like your area of NH is not too dramatically different from Northern NJ! NH has some beautiful lakes as well so this may broaden my property search....Thanks and sorry for sounding a bit naive, but I have always been in either the NYC area or South shore Long Island and also Jersey shore. I remember the first time I went swimming in Lake George in July expecting the water to be frigid mountain lake temps only to discover it was 75 degrees! I thought ....this is heaven! Now Lake George is above my pay scale, but something in that zone or preferably below on a lake or river is looking more and more appealing. Plus my family members all have homes on the waterfront in LI so I can get my fill of the sea if I need, but they would also have a mountain region option if they choose to visit which they never do haha. Something about how crowded and dense the area has gotten and being on an island where the only way off is thru traffic and tolls keeps them staying in place.

The NH lakes are expensive for real estate. Are the Catskills out of your price range? The Berkshires in W MA are very nice.

Everything is going up lately including the long dead Catskills, but this region still has the most affordable properties for me considering that it's not so far from everything and everyone.
So lake Winnipesaukee is out for me I guess?:emptywallet::emptywallet::makeitrain".

Drove out to Winchester this morning, here's a few pics from on the way....
A granite wall in Fitzwilliam. The house was built in 1813, the original owner owned a local granite quarry. IMG_20190823_42153.jpg IMG_20190823_54833.jpg
A spooky house, apparently occupied... IMG_20190823_53132.jpg
    My take... IMG_20190823_5193.jpg

If you want LOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSS of information, I'll save you the research! Just PM me and I'll tell you what you want to know but I'll say this, There is a reason I picked Southern New Hampshire and especially the area I'm in. Anyone who has been to my little piece of the earth will tell you it's so quiet and the area is just a nice. A local told me it was the "forgotten" part of New Hampshire, But they like it that way!

Love the tightly stacked granite wall Molly, and you know I love old houses!... especially ones left to age with a patina of history. That said, this house needs some rehabbing Asap!! We had 3 inches of rain drop here in a little over an hours time around 7pm. So much rain the transformer in front of my house blew with the sound of a shot gun blast! I was without power the rest of the night. I just finished installing the gutter and downspout on my new firewood shelter, but seems I was a day too late :singingintherain:lol!

I’m not sure if extra points or deducted, for hoarding in the rain with leather seats.
