A few months ago Penn Live Magazine had a pic on the front page of a Spotted Lanternfly. I took a good look at it so if i ever saw one I'd know what it was...
So today we're unloading a machine from a tractor trailer in northwest pa and i see a big bug moving on a piece of wood blocking. I knew what it was so i immediately rolled the block over and smashed it.
The driver saw me moving the 4x4 and told me he was keeping the lumber, i told him i just smashed a lanternfly. He replies "you better not have smashed a lanternfly..."
The truck had just came from eastern pa and the driver told me he picked 17 lanternflies off the truck before he left. All drivers in that area have to be trained to look for and remove the LF if they drive in that area.

That LF just traveled 150 miles in 3 hours.

I’ll have to Google... but I’m assuming that’s an invasive species....

Why do they pick 'em off? If they know they are bad, and they obviously do since they are looking for them, why not just smash them and be done with it?

I think this is what I saw last fall when I went through PA. They were all over, even in the cities. Nasty for sure as they were really thick. My son told me a lot of orchards and grapes and such were being ruined by these things.

Are they there yet? Or, don't you remember?
    So, this "taskforce"......is it pro-Lanternfly, or anti-Lanternfly?

The PA Dept. Of Agriculture was here at the Juniata Locomotive Shops today, they are all over the ailanthus trees along the mainline tracks right outside our shop.

I'm betting it will be on the local news in the next few days.....

    They were good guys.
    20190813_105057.jpg

The task force dropped everything to come out. Mine was the first pic in the area they received. (And the first correct pic. they've had other pics that weren't LFlies)

We looked all over the crates and machines that were delivered and we didn't find any more LF or egg masses.
I believe they are going to contact the trucking company...

They showed me some pics of LF on trees in Berks county:bug:. The trees were literally covered in bugs and their black moldy poo that chokes the trees out.
    It was bad!:(

The ailanthus trees seem to be the LF's favorite tree. Also known as The Tree of Heaven, ailanthus is also an invasive tree from asia.
Hmmm...invasive asian trees attract invasive asian bugs...:hair:

Well, since TOH is sucky firewood, too bad the LF doesn't just target TOH like EAB does Ash...problem(s) would fix itself eventually!
