got some nice white oak rounds from Craigslist ad today. Large section of tree has fallen and needed to be cut up. Will definitely go back for more!
Thank you. Couple towns over so not too bad. Truck good, but didn’t want to overload. That wood was HEAYY. 16 inch branch pieces looked to be close to 100 yrs old from growth rings. Who knows how old the actual tree is ( still alive and standing). The property owner invited me back so I’m pretty stoked about that. I wanted to get a good look at the leaves to confirm it was white oak but leaves started pretty high up. Pretty sure white oak though.
I agree with the bark looking like red oak. I think I was getting thrown off by the color of the wood itself which looked like white. I was told tree had been down for a year so maybe that is effecting the color?
Did it have the whiskey smell when split? All the white oak ive ever cut has had it, even if a year or two old. (not sure about the chestnut oak though) Never cut any of it.
Red oak is a bit lighter than white oak, but has more pink tint. White oak is a little more brown in color. They are quite similar when stained and IIRC the two can be used interchangeably in wood working
I'd say its just red oak thats faded a bit from weathering. white oak bark is silver/grey and flakey/peeling
The smell when cutting it was like red oak but much tamer. Some red oak I’ve cut in the past smelled like vomit.
I really think it’s white. I split that wood today and my wife confirmed it smelled like whiskey. It was nice splitting the nice straight rounds. A little warm outside but the rear part of my wood pile where I process wood is mostly shaded.
