Wife is back from the Bahamas so I was able to put in a decent day today - 6.5 hours. We are working on filling in the gap between my two mixed piles. I climbed up on top of one of them to take these pics. One is of the gap to be filled and the other is the first oak pile then the rest of the logs left and other random piles (cherry, long pieces, the new oak pile) in the distance.
So since this is not something new to you, I can only assume it must pay off in the end, after everything is figured in, enough to be worth all the work anyways?
The two mixed piles are almost one now. We had a lot of large diameter mixed hardwood so we used the tw6 this week but I’ve now moved my small splitter in that spot to finish off that mixed pile and the tw6 is now on to the new oak pile. It’s been a very productive week.
This is pretty impressive, I can barely move a paint brush in the heat. Can I ask what you think you end up putting in for man hours on a per cord basis?
A few years ago I tried keeping track of all hours spent doing firewood stuff but it got to be more hassle than it’s worth. When you factor in moving logs as they get dropped off, working on saws, cleaning up bark and splitter scraps, moving long pieces and short pieces to their respective piles, taking care of all the uglies, then the actual cutting and splitting I have no clue! Haha.
You have put on a show this summer. Glad I could watch the progress. What kind is your smaller blue splitter?
It’s an 11 year old Iron and Oak 22 ton with 4 way wedge. It’s on it’s second engine and 3rd control valve. It’s seen at least 1400 cords through it.
So as I stated before I like to set goals when tackling firewood. This morning I set my new goal. It may be a lofty one but it will keep me pushing myself. I want to have ALL of these logs cut by Labor Day. Here’s 2 different angles of the task at hand.
No problem, just another day's work and a couple tanks of gas...... I know you can do it...that will keep the splitter going.
How are you feeling? Do you still have any limitations or things that smart? My back gets sore just looking at all that wood! I think you said you cut up higher off of a front end loader but still bending to pick all those pieces up could give a fella a back ache.
