buZZsaw BRAD has a good idea. Maybe not firewood if he/she has no use for it, but staying in good graces with everyone at work is always smart. That said I know most layoffs are just a matter of what tier they're up to cutting and so there's not much you can do but hope and go on with your life. I wish you luck with that.
Good score on easy splitting oak! I hate dinging the corner tip of my maul which is why I split over another log, but a little grinding will touch it up in no time.

id bribe my boss with wood any day of the week. Im self employed!

The upper corner of my Fiskars is always hitting the ground from the follow through. So much so i just leave it dull. I do split on a chopping block round, but not always.

Just a little post to keep the car hoarding thread on the map hehe!

Well even though we have been getting a ton of rain, just cutting to size and stacking my wild cherry logs properly has helped immensely with splitting! Remember, many of the logs were pulled out of the middle of that large pile and so were shaded and a bit soaked with rain water. This was giving them that hard dense taffy like consistency that was a real good at absorbing energy as well as getting the maul tip stuck into the end grain.
Since the weather cooled down some I decided to take a break from yard and garden work to split a few rounds of cherry and some of that bark free Black locust. The cherry was much easier since the wood was more brittle and full logs opened up with no more than three swings.

Just a little survey of my current firewood in the yard that's awaiting processing. ...Also a shot of some cookie cut-offs and uglies (yes thats an old folding chair protecting the basement window) plus my little firewood shelter by the old wisteria covered walkway. Hope you'all are enjoying the beautiful weather!

I love the wisteria arbor! It takes a lot of discipline to keep wisteria under control. I had one go wild on me and had to kill it.
You have plenty of rounds to keep you busy on not-so-hot days.
I finished splitting the last of the locust and cherry in the driveway. I have a few rounds of pin oak to run through it, and then the splitter can go back from whence it came. I like it a lot, but until I get some more wood, no great hurry to buy one. IMG_20190724_48959.jpg

That looks like a heavy duty splitter Midwinter , guess you split it all with total confidence:yes:.

I like the way you kinda made a neat stack firewood hedge to provide a little privacy from your neighbors. I see it didn't take you long to fill those used racks you scored.

And yes, tell me about it with regards to wisteria!
When I bought the old house almost 30 years ago it had the american wisteria variety growing peacefully on the porch. 20 years ago I had the idea to get the wisteria off the porch and make a pretty sturdy long trellis next to the porch to train it to grow on. I was a member of Costco at the time when I saw a nice vine of Asian Wisteria being sold for $16.99 and thought this would boost the coverage on the new trellis. I didn't realize at the time the asian variety is an invasive species and it not only needs constant pruning, but it sends out so many suckers im constantly doing damage control yanking out "the little shop of horrors"! The worst though is that it grows a thick stem and twists itself up like a python tearing structures apart.

Here you can see the interior where Im constantly battling the forces and collapsing roof supports with reinforcements, though I think a total rebuild is coming soon. Incidentally you can see in the foreground the older thin vined American wisteria which just behaves nicely and doesn't get aggressively twisted up. Now it's being shaded and choked out by the Asian species whose base rises up in the front inner right corner. I have now resorted to nailing and screwing reinforcements right to the trunk of this beast...Hey, if you cant beat-em... join-em!
[IMG]This is the inner front room section. The walkway is a 22ft L shaped trellis and pergola room combo
[IMG]This is a picture from last year showing the blooms in spring.

It does look nice and shady under there.
I still have a wisteria problem. The lady next door planted 5 or 6 on her chainlink fence. IMG_20190724_15353.jpg That's it invading my yard on the right. And did we mention the self seeding?

Yeah, wisteria for a boarder fence is not a good idea in most cases...that and bamboo

Give it 10 or 20 years and it could completely cover that pine tree.

haha I saw that too! But those extra lips make me think of "Feed me Seymour!"
I currently have about 2 and 1/2 cords split and stacked. About a half cord split and awaiting and stacking which will bring me to 3 cords under shelter. I can keep about 3 and a half cords sheltered and this is really all the room for shelters I have unless I take up garden beds. I should have shelters completely filled by early August. Depending on the winter I burn 4 to 5 cords of non stop around the clock burning. last year it took 4 and a half, but 2017 took 5 to keep the wife and kids happy. So doing the math I need another cord and a half to two which I usually get during the burning season hoarding only dry wood out in nature. It keeps me busy and I also pick up unseasoned wood during my hunts to save for the year after. It's not perfect, but It's my compromise while living in a comparative city to most people on this site.

I do intend to retire in 7 to 10 years and get a house near or on waterfront with some land and a bit more privacy. Actually I know you live in southern Connecticut, not sure how close to the Sound, but that area near or including Rhode Island are some places on my radar for waterfront. I am also researching for a good lake in the upper New York to New Hampshire area. That said, not too far north because though I like firewood, I love my Summers and want waterfront not an ice skating rink. haha!:shiver:

There were a lot more nice car-sized logs. I'll go back tomorrow when I've got the carseat out.

Yes, I've got it down! The infant one was a bear, but this bigger one is a piece of cake.
