My dad lives about an hour from me and whenever he has trees taken down, he asks his tree guy to leave the logs for me. He had 7 pretty large white pines taken down a few days ago, and when I went by last night to grab the first load I was a little surprised that all the wood was gone. Turns out that he had asked the guy to leave the wood, but the guy told my dad that because of the sap, burning pine was a surefire way to have a chimney fire, and he was going to save me from burning my house down. So they took all the trees away. :headbang:

This guy has always left me all the hardwood before and he seems honest, so I think it's just the reputation pine has. I've seen it debunked here and countless other places, but I guess it's a pretty ingrained fallacy.

I'm bummed about losing all that wood.:(

Has your dad ever asked his tree guy to drop off unwanted hardwood for you to pick up?
Might be a good time to start ;)

Most people don't want the pine.
Not just because of the old wive's tale attached to it, but because of the extra work required of pine.
It burns twice as fast, so you need to cut, process and store twice as much. Just the extra limbing time needed is over the top for some people. When you are surrounded by premium hardwoods, messing with it isn't really cost effective.
Hoarders that love processing firewood will often make the time for it as a stash of it has its place and uses.

Sorry for your loss!!! I know the feeling!

When i joined FHC back in February i was one of those ingrained folks 303Bourbon, but now i know otherwise thanks to the forum.

Around these parts i know of no one that burns it other than for kindling ie board/lumbers scraps etc nor of any softwood for "regular" firewood. Most of the logs at the local dump are EWP and assorted softwoods.

I dont hoard softwoods...dont have room and have ample higher btu hardwoods available to me.

I just passed up a roadside score of EWP last week. Good amount too!
See my thread Morning Score Turns Out to be Soft Wood! :-(

I'm putting up all the red pine I can here for a several reasons: I'm starting from scratch hoarding wood again at our new place. It is standing dead. It is 50 feet from the stacks. It requires minimal processing.

Pretty much free BTU's for this winter. I'll get hardwoods put up when I can for next winter.

One of the best things about pine is how good it smells after you get it all C/S/S and it’s sitting there in a big pile. Mmmmmm! Love to sniff my stacks! Wife thinks I’m crazy but I brought her out to smell it and she doesn’t think I’m so weird anymore. Ha! :D:stack::stacker:
