I like to look at the size of the chips, and the feel of the saw, if its cutting well, i can feel the saw pulling, yet continuing through the log. My 044 really pulls a chain, in fact on a well filed chain, and good wood, i've cut maple, and fir a time or 2 without chaps, and it actually stung my leg the way the chain was throwing chips. To me, that was a good feeling, lol And, the texture of the chips, wide, and slightly curled to me, mean's its flat out slicing its way cleanly through the wood. That makes for a good day of cutting wood. Funny you mentioned ''metal detecting''i was going to end by saying its a great feeling until you find a ''hidden secret'' inside a log.
