(Silly question, right?) Her daughter is having an outdoor wedding in August at the family place about 4 miles out of town & they are trying to get the place cleaned up. I figured it was probably mostly cottonwood & wasn’t to excited about it. But there’s a large standing dead elm in the yard that I’ve my eye on for a while. She told me I could have it also when I got a chance but would like to get this other pile cleaned up before the wedding. She told me where it was & I said I’d take a look. Now I know that the groom to be was cleaning up earlier this spring and burning some brush & the fire got away from him. But I wasn’t expecting to find a large pile of charred green trees. It’s actually turning out to be a pretty good score! It’s probably 60/70 percent elm and the rest is hackberry I believe. I can back the pickup right up to it. Hauled 3 loads already, and probably 3 more to get. Get kinda dirty from the char while loading. After I get it split & stacked I figure it should be ready for the 2022/2023 season, it’s just as wet as if it was cut down yesterday. No wonder they couldn’t burn it!!!

Nice score for sure. Easy to get to, free what's not to like. Looks like the 562xp made short work of that truck load.

Oh yeah, pre-burned firewood. Charge extra for that. Whole Foods would.

Is the charred wood harder on chains?
I heard it is but no personal experience.

I think maybe it is a little bit. This stuff has also been moved by a tractor and has a little sand in it, so hard to say for sure. But probably is

Wood is where you find it sometimes and it appears you found some good stuff. Help that bride and groom out!

I don’t really know about the clean up. Looks like they put it there with a tractor and loader so hopefully they can get rid of the brush the same way. I got to track her down and find out. I doubt they will try burning it again. Fire department had to show up and bail them out last time. Plus it is too wet to burn any time soon

That is another job that the handheld log tongs excel at. Keep you a little cleaner while handling. Good score and more to come!

Nice cold deck of logs and good that you can drive right to it! I might add that from the looks of the surrounding countryside, even cottonwood would be better than no wood at all!

Yes, hardwoods are kinda rare commodity around here. Especially with this easy of access. I’m always on the lookout for a good score.

Yep been seriously thinking about getting a set of them. Funny thing is that hadn’t entered my mind while working this score!

X2. I take for granted the fact i live in a heavily forested state. Lots of hardwood.
Keep us updated on the score Sandhillbilly

Check out Amazon. Seems almost everyone wants $50 for the husky tongs but I just got another set for a neighbor and bought through Amazon for less than $40. I've tried several different models of the log tongs but have not found anything better than the husky ones.

The only thing I would caution is to not get the small model. But this thing will really save your back!

Yup, us Nebraska’s typically get either yard trees, or stuff you really gotta work for. Seems I’m either carrying rounds 100+ft thru a shelter belt of trees or getting junk wood. Been lucky this year and hope it keeps coming once it cools off a bit.

If you all could see the area I live in I think you would be surprised at the amount of quality wood I come up with. And the majority of it is dead and dry ready to burn. Haven’t really ever cut much live or green stuff. Usually because I was almost always out of wood and needed heat now. Of course that was before all you nice folks taught me about the 3 year plan. Things are changing in my backyard.
