I can't believe you said that! I kind of thought you are an original Downeaster when it came to being practical!
Did I read correctly that you had your driveway paved? I have a scooter that I use to get around. I can go about most places on it. It can pull a small wagon. So I am able to sit and do weed wacking etc. I can go to the mailbox . I have lift on the end of the van so I can take it to stores etc. You can get them cheap on Craigslist. Depending on your wt, you can buy them new from $700 to $4000. Go with the 4 wheels if you want to use it mostly outside. 3 wheels turn better and go in tighter places. There are electric wheel chairs that are extremely versatile. My brother has both.

Get a slave cable kit and plug the old drive into the new puter.

You may well be able to operate the software as long as it is compatible with the OS

Here it is July 7th and we had a fire this morning.

First week of June is normally THE END of fire season

We have RAIN coming Tues/Wed and likely see a spot fire.

Super happy to have been able to give the new controllers a good ROAD TEST before we get into the fall season

Tried that once with a usb interface to the sata HD- it was s-l-o-w but it works. Under 10 bucks for the cable and maybe 30 bucks for a docking station.

I guess if its a sata to sata cable and the new rig has an external sata port then it would be ok.

Now that I think of it I use to run some small programs from a HD in a docking station on my work computer. I always put the old HD into a station there.

But your right, it would likely need to be the same OS

It has an extra bay, and the chat before I ent in to buy it said that my old HD would fit, which is why it's so maddening that they wouldn't do it.

I've spent a perfectly lovely afternoon reinstalling crap and then there are all the emails I lost. Did have a backup file of old emails from 2016 until 12/2018 but that don't help with the last 6 months. They transferred all my personal files, but still had to set up Outlook to access comcast, download Adobe Acrobat reader, and on and on. Then there is all the setting for all the programs that I had perfect for the way I use stuff. Oh, and now my printer won't recognize that the computer is capable of running it (it wants older versions). ARGGH!

But, I'm back online since I had lost even that capability shortly after I posted this morning (I guess Comcast renews the IP address in the mornings - it had been running off my router until then).

Hey bb, They have hdd docking stations for desktops. Depends on what you have for hdd and what the new PC has for interface options.

Here's a serial ata to usb 3.1 which will allow you to view the files on the old pc's hdd. Not sure you can run the programs though.

Sounds to me like you can just buy a sata had cable and put your old hd inside your new computer. I'm not sure what the issue you are having is, other than someone not wanting to do what you ask.

Huh, that is cool - I'll have to check it out.

Finally got the updated printer software downloaded, and it is now talking to the computer (or vice-versa). Got updated software for the wireless mouse and keyboard so they are working too. I had been working off of old USB input devices because I couldn't stand the crappy wireless devices that came with the computer - but they should work okay for my work laptop docking station - which is where the USB input devices came from.

Got Acrobat downloaded Then went to MS to download Picture Manager and a mathematical input program (from Office 10). Got Word and Excel situated more to my liking. Got my TypePad and FB pages set up in Firefox. Registered some other stuff. Still need to download some programs like CutePDF and goodness knows what else - I'll discover them as I need them I guess. Also need to change the wallpaper since they stuck me with some horrid colorful umbrellas :hair:

I have spent over 6 hours of a beautiful day inside working on this thing (okay, part of that was the pick up of the computer).

Hang in there B. What you are going through is exactly why I dont like to change computers unless I absolutely have to. I dont know how some people change them every year or two.

Then again, the older I get the less I want to screw with this chit-I use to like cutting edge, now I dont see the need for most of it. Now all I want is the Staples Easy Button

And Pete that does not mean MAC

My biggest issue is they didn't migrate any of my email, calendar or contacts - and they told me they didn't do that unless I had a backup file already. If I had a backup file, I wouldn't need them to migrate it now, would I?

B, whats the OS on the old and new rigs? As Snowy mentioned you may be able to open Outlook on the old drive than export a pst file and import into the new rig's outlook install.

Actually you should be able to transfer the pst file from the old hard drive once you get an hdd docking station or a cable to let the new rig see the old drive.

    Google is your friend here

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking now that I know about the docking station (thanks to you and jtakeman ). The old computer was Win7 (or 8) updated to Win 10.

 Us Mac people don't have these issues.

My old desktop graphics card crapped out about 4 yrs ago, and wasn't going to bother trying to find a used one, so bought new(er) 27" Apple refurb, cracked open the old unit, took the HD and Super (CD) Drive out, sold the rest for parts. Bought a case for the HD & CD drive, plugged them into the USB ports, and they were up & running in 5 minutes.
Drag & drop all the files & programs I needed, took all of maybe an hour to be finished. And since the latest Mac OS that was in it auto-updates for programs & software, within a week, I had all the latest updates installed. Easy as a cup of coffee.:coffee:

I think you are on the right track. You will likely get a "permissions" error or something like that when you 1st try and access the old drive. Take the message and google it in relation to Win 10 to see where you go to allow access. Its been a while since I have done one, plus I am not too savvy on win 10.
