    Hello
Just got the smoker so we tried some smoking.
This Daniel Boone model has a temp range of 150 to 550 Deg F. The new Prime direct drive motors keep the set temp plus or minus only 2-3 degrees!
We used apple wood pellets to smoke the Bratwurst in a disposable aluminum pan with butter, onions, brown sugar and Sam Summer Ale.
I flipped the brats after 1.5 hours for even cooking.
The WiFi phone app that shows the temp with the built in timers for the 3 hours made it easy to track.

    Pic 1 - Basic Recipe
Pic 2,3 & 4 - grill control panel & app shows temp and time
    Pic 5 & 6 - Bratwurst prep.
    Pic 7 & 8 - Pellet grill smoking
Pic 9 - peeking through the stainless hood window
Pic 10 - Beer Brats are done!

Looks good. Did you get much smoke flavor? I think I would smoke them directly on the grill first for an hour our so being careful not to pierce them and then give em a beer bath for am hour or so.

    Lamb brats are my favorite.

How do you like the smoker? I like the window in the lid, don’t thing too many grills have that.

I like the window on the pellet supply more than the one in the lid. My pellet grill doesn't have that. Have to pay attention or it can run out.

This has a low pellet sensor so you get an alarm when the pellets are low. :)

I really like the smoker! It is direct drive with brushless DC motors so the set temperature is what you set it to plus or minus only 2-3 degrees. Also the auger motor and fan motor and control panel will last longer than the other grills with AC motors. :)
The window is really nice to check the food without opening the lid too!

That is a good idea to smoke them on the grill first. I just went by the book for the first time. :)
The Lamb Brats sounds great! Will have to try them for sure if I can find any around here in Salem NH?
I also like the server mode for the WiFi so if I run an errand I can check the temps on the phone.
Due to FCC regulations you can only start and stop the grill in Local mode.

Any tips on keeping the grill clean?
Rutland White Off for the window and foil formed grease drip pan and grease drip bucket liners or will tin foil surfice? Do you put foil over the SS grates for burgers and not for steaks?

Hmm. Way more love than I give my 5 year old gmg DB. Also have the DC that lived in the truck for three years when we camped often. Both are on the patio now. Vacuum ash out as needed or a couple times a year. I scrape the grease off the edges once a year and just use foil for the grease tray. Never have foiled the grates and they seem solid after tons of use.
    Love my GMG cookers. [IMG]

Wow JT - Thanks for your comments! Looks like we have a good cooker here!
Do those GMG grills stay out in the rain & snow?
What do you like to smoke on your DB?

They do stay out. I have covers for both but don’t ever use them except if I’m hauling them. Should, but then I couldn’t turn them on from the comfort of inside.
I’ve smoked ribs(all types), brisket, butts, beef roasts, prime rib, chicken, and cook steaks and burgers and brats often. One favorite is local brats, grilled just till brown, then cut into bite sized pieces, two large onions, a red, yellow, and orange pepper or two of each color, and some Tator chunks all cooked in a foil pan till Tator’s are done. Usually toss it all in avocado oil and my favorite seasoning/rub first.

Bought the GMG pizza oven attachment for the db last year and it cooks an amazing pizza in about 2 minutes.

    Very nice!
Have you had to replace any parts in 5 years?

Yes. Just in the last month the db needed a new temp sensor $11.00 and the dc needed the igniter $15. I’ve also replaced the main fan on the db once. I’ve read the new updated grills have better parts, but even with what I’ve needed, I like the grills. I’d like to take them all apart and, after removing all electronics, hot water wash it and re paint the outside.

Wow that is great! The new DB & JB Prime grills have direct drive motors (12 vdc brushless like your Davy Crockett) so they are supposed to last a bit longer with all the starting and stopping and keep the temp to the set temp plus or minus 2 - 3 degrees but even so that is a great track record for your grills! Very impressive. :)
I just got some grease bucket liners at Walmart 6 for $3.97 !! Luckily all of the pellet grills have the same size grease buckets.
A light wiping with a can of Acetone from Home Depot will take the grease off and the paint if you rub hard. But then the new high temp grill paint will stick much better. These stoves are definitely worth repainting and refurbishing. Good luck doing it.
Thanks so much for all your comments, it helps a lot!
Happy grilling and happy July 4th weekend. :)

    Hello
The food grade pellets are more costly because they use vegetable oil in the extrusion process for the machinery instead of petroleum based oil.
    $10 - $20 per 20 lb bag see below.
Pit boss pellets at Walmart are the lowest price
However they only use 1-2 lbs per hour depending on temperature.
Most grills have an 18 lb hopper so
9-18 hours on a full hopper! Pretty good!

    See discussion here. :)

What kind of pellets do you like?

Just a recommendation. When covering your grease tray with foil be very careful. The upturned edges can give you a real surprise if you run your hand or fingers down the edge. They are damm sharp on mine. Heads up.
Needless to say you can guess how I found outo_O

On another note. We used our DB Sat. as purely a grill. Burgers, bacon wrapped loin and dogs. Cranked it up to 450 and it worked flawlessly. I have a sneaking suspicion my trusty old Weber may be stepping aside...

Yes, we did chicken and boneless country style ribs with the meat probe on 400 deg f using the WiFi phone app with the count down timer to time each side was fun!
