I knew working with slabs was going to be a pia.
But i was willing to work a little more to get a better quality wood. Ie beech verse cottonwood. I supply three house holds. We are all 2 years ahead and its 90% cottonwood the rest is white pine. Was looking for something better. My normal tree service guys have not been able to cut much due to all the rain. They both work from large bucket trucks and quit cutting after having to repair torn up lawns already this year.

Some of the Amish in southern Ohio sell it for $20. A guy I know was buying it from a certain Amish mill for $5 a bundle because they had excess and needed the room. That price didn’t stay that way for long. It jumped to $20. You can pull up in a dump truck or trailer and they have a loader fill you up.

Personally I would not pay more than 20/bundle. I used to burn quite a bit of it in my old stove. Most times I would get it for 10/bundle but I did pay 20 at times. That is a long way to haul and then it is work to process.

I'm a snob and would turn down a free bundle, not worth all the work for so little heat in return.
Going be filling that stove up frequently.

One year I had a lot of lumber to burn. Cedar boards. Not scraps but 1” rough sawn lumber.
Even though cedar is low on btus it burnt very well in the Fireview I had at the time.
The trick is to stack it in the stove neatly and flat not just toss it in. Acts more like big all-nighters as opposed to kindling.
Obviously easier with dimensional lumber than the scraps but I think boards are a viable heat source if used properly.

I'll give you that, I could see if it's stacked in tight how it would be a slower burn. I'm curious what your stack looked like after that season?
    Anymore creosote than normal?

The last time I bought slabwood it was $15 for an XL bundle...all hardwood, mainly Ash n Oak...might be $20 now IDK.
Not worth it for $50 per...as was stated, certainly not premium firewood, but will get you by in a pinch, PITA to process too...I'd pass on this one...

I do know this: What ever you pay, as soon as you commit and buy all those bundles, The rain will stop and the sun come out and your tree guys will dropping oak, locust, ash, beech and other quality woods left and right! Nice clean wood and all close to your house. I speak from personal experience!

    I missed this post.
I've burned oak slabwood. The little extra time spent cutting it is time you don't spend splitting it. At least the bark on beech isn't so thick. It seasons quick, so if you don't get to cutting it right away at least it isn't sitting there in logs soaking wet not drying very fast.
