70 to 75% Beech, Rest Cherry, Ash, and unknown. The 1st picture is 5 bundles supposed to be 1 1/2 face cords per bundle. The second picture is 30 bundles. Trying to get an idea of what each bundle is worth. And then what all of them as a bulk package deal. Boards are 10 to 12 feet long
Wild guess that picked up and in bundles and 12 feet long; 100/cord. 30 B: 45 FC 3 FC/Cord. 15 cord 1500 bucks 250 for the 5 other bundles 1750 total. Twice that at 200/cord and half that at 50/cord And two bundles / cord. $50/bundle @ 100/ cord Are you looking to buy them or some? I’m curious to know what they cost.
Wow that is exactly the way he priced it out. I am looking at buying all of it. I offered him 30.00 a bundle. And he gave me the 50.00 a bundle. That seems to high to me.
so each bundle is approximately a half cord. Dunno what the market around here is for similar sawmill "scraps". Most wood offered uncut is either a triaxle load or dumpster full of logs. Some "seasoned", basically sat in the round for a couple years in a mound of trunks. Looks like most of the wood just has to be bucked and some maybe halved. $30-50 each is fair IMO, but im CHEEP! Never have paid for wood. Ive comped the dump guy with a gift card and have given wood away as a comp as well or did a favor in return. Id make sure most of it is premium quality hardwood and not low end btu hardwood.
It's say that really is about 3/4 beech. If he said $50 a bundle, and a bundle is a half cord, that's a great deal. Granted it needs cutting.
I’ve never seen wood offered that way before. A hundge per cord is a about as cheap as I see offered by a processor. But that’s where I live. And thats green and in logs. If I came across something like that I think I might try a couple bundles for chits and grins @ 50. But at the whole enchilada, dealer should move a little bit. And could probably deliver. Good luck and keep us posted
Theres a amish pallet place back in illinois that sold that stuff. I bought 4 big bundles of it and i think it was $60 or $80 total. Bundles were probably 6' across Ended up building a big jig or whatever to hold around 20 pieces at a time to cut them to length.
If it helps, I get Lodgepole slab wood, 4' diam. x 8' approx. $30/ bundle. $50 doesn't sound too bad for good wood.
I guess I’m just cheap. I would have to hand load & unload them and its about 24 miles one way. Each bundle weights about 3000 lbs buy my best guess. So that would be 2 trips per bundle $ adding up quickly.
I’m not sure I’d pay half that with a 50 mile round trip. As an aside Redneck, you’ll get more btu’s from wood in the round.
the round trip makes it not worth it IMO. Lots of work. Could you buck to length and make one trip? Cut and load on sight? Neatly stacked a half cord should fit an 8' bed PU.
Right. I'd pass on the deal. In my opinion, those who sell slabwood think it is worth more than it is. Also if you don't have a buzz saw, to me it is more of a pain bucking slabs than bucking rounds. In addition, one has to remember that a large portion of what you are buying is bark. Sorry, but even though bark burns, there is very little btu in it but lots of ash. So in actual btu, there is not much in most slab wood except on the butt end of a log.
Local-ish sawmill sells one cord bundles of oak slabs for $30. They sell pine bark for $22 a yard and pine chips for about half of that. What the market will bear. Too high a price and it sits taking up valuable space. They never have sawdust for sale 'retail'. They never have pine slabs, so they must grind them all up and move it bulk ? Feedstock for fuel or compost I'd guess. $30: It's debarked which is a plus. Bark burns but it can be a lot of ash, especially when you're talking slabs and the ratio of bark to wood.
I think this is worth highlighting! Saw mill waste slabs are not an apples to apples equivalent to regular cordwood because they are mostly bark and sap wood. Looks like a lot of beech which is premo, but I think I'd still pass at 50 a bundle. Some smaller mills actually give the stuff away.
