Started to split about 6-7 face cords of some old Ash I have been neglecting. 2 rows 25' long x 5' high. First row was from July 2018. Row behind it is from June 2016! Concerning the 2nd row...There is about 40-60 Ash rounds ranging from 5-8" in diameter and when you pick them up the bark falls off all the way. So here is my question....I know the general rule is anything 6" or more to split at least in half......But being already 3 years old and I won't be using these for at least 2 more years...Can I cheat, just leave them and not split them??? By the time they hit the stove they will be 5 years old..Thoughts......
If you're storing them undercover for 2 more years, I wouldn't worry about them. It's nice when the bark falls off.
You can cheat. Your secrets safe with me, I wont tell anyone. I half my logs starting at 4-5" just for ease or handling and getting them into the insert. You could always half them when being moved to the house/porch etc.
I would leave them whole and if they sizzle when it comes time to burn them , halve them and stack some beside the stove for a week.
