    Morning all
Sorry to hear of your PUTER issue B... These are always a pain.

Could be the graphics card, or possibly the monitor is going south...

If you have a spare monitor, try that first....
    Flat screen ?????

If its the graphics card just swap in a fresh one.

    How old is the machine????

I have a laptop, which is what I'm using right now - I hate laptops. Desktop was bought in 2012 as a new model refurb (ie, someone returned it right after buying it) and laptop is 2013 (old LT died right after I moved into this place). Both have been updated to Win10 and have office 16, but it is the age I worry about.

We had a fire in weeee stove all night.
This is the first June since we built this place back in 1993 that we have had a fire all night this late in June.

Usually by the first week of June we are done with all night fires, and by week two we are shut down for the season, except maybe as spot fire to take the chill off a time or two, and that's limited...

Giving the new controller a great workout though.

Weather is supposed to improve some today..

Monitor is less than 3 months old and works with my work and home laptops - definitely a computer innard issue. All fans are working, and obviously the CPU is still good otherwise I would have no internet or wifi.

Edit: I also hooked the box up to the monitor I use for my work laptop, just in case it suddenly had an issue with its newer monitor, but that didn't help. Fairly positive it is the graphics card.

Easy to pull the side cover off and replace the card.

Be sure you get the same type of graphics card

    Likely is a PCI-E card.

As long as you get a compatible card you are plug and play.. (Plug and pray)

Unless the PC is an old dog it's worth fixing...

    Good luck

Hopefully its not the BSOD (windows Blue Screen of Death) and it is graphics related. When you boot up do you see the bios stuff on the screen and then blue screen?

If no then its likely graphics related-this is good indicator as its an easy fix. :)
If you do get the bios info, then the graphics may or may not be the issue. This can be more difficult diagnosing

Regarding graphics fix, if current graphics is on the MB you generally will need to disable that in the bios to use an actual graphics card. Otherwise its a simple change of cards and windows should update the drivers accordingly.

As Snowy mentioned, you will need to know what kind of interface your MB uses for a card. If you dont know what make and model MB you have (to identify graphics slot specs) but have a card on the MB, remove it and take it to Best Buy to match it up by interface. Or get the model of graphic card off of it and google the specs.

Let us know where you are at.

AFAIK, fine....never even a whimper of any sickness. <knocks on head (wood)>
Again, depends on what variant of the shot you got. There was a tri-valent, and the new quad-valent....I had the quad.

Probably better with new one (desktop), and put the old HD in extra bay, and make it the start-up drive....that's what I did, but made the old HD an external slave and just dragged my important files from the old HD to the new one. Life is easy with a Mac.

I have a couple EVGA GTX 750Ti 2Gb PCIe video cards laying around if you'd like one. Pulled from 2 of my grandkids computers when I updated them at Xmas.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice. I have a Radeon graphics card and I removed it to take in with me when I went to get a new one. Then I saw it had a fan too (the card is in such a way that you can't see the fan). Uggh, was that full of crap!. I blew it out with canned air, waited a couple of minutes - in which I drilled a hole in the back of the desk for better wire management for my wireless mouse/keyboard doohickie, and speaker plug in. Once I knew it was good and dry, I plugged in the moniter and voila, everything was good.

I was 99% sure that the graphics card was it because it wasn't a blue screen of death (very, very light blue) and there was no boot up screen or anything, but the boot up sounded normal and everything else was supported such as the back up drive I have in one of the USP ports - I heard the ding dong when I unplugged it.

Thanks for the offer scajjr2 - mighty kind of you, but I'm all set.

    Total $$ = 0

Graphics card may have been overheated.

Keep an eye on it, if it gets hinky again it's time for a fresh one.

MY Core P5 machine has a big graphics card that takes up two slots.

The more on board memory the card has the better things run.

It definitely overheated and went wonky. Hopefully all is good unless B is doing some graphics intensive processing.

Internet, spreadsheets and word processing it may be OK.

I had a work one where the fan died. Still worked after replacing the fan but had random lockups here and there-even in Excel.
