As part of my attempt to reduce the flammability of my property, I had a faller come out and drop a number of trees that were too close to the house, garage etc. for me to attempt myself. I was nervous, he wasn't. The small tree in the foreground leaned toward the house. Doug chained it to the big ponderosa, prepared the little one then dropped the big one. He felled 7 trees on my property and 2 big dead ones just across the fence on my neighbor's property in about an hour. Never broke sweat, easy money.
I have hired two brothers several times that have been cutting together since they were in high school. It's not surprising they can put things where they want it but it's still great to watch.
My neighbor (whose family owns a logging company) estimated 7000 board feet in the two big ponderosas. If I can find someone with a mill who will work for wood, I'll have it milled. I'm hearing numbers like $350/1000 to mill. That's just not in the budget, particularly since I don't have a need for the lumber. It would almost pay to buy a mill, except it wouldn't end there. I'd need something to move the logs..... It's starting to look like a lot of firewood.
Already working on the trees by the garage. I'm going to need more stacking space and I won't be able to burn the slash until wildfire season is over. It's getting a little crowded.
If one needs firewood and not lumber, then why hire someone to mill it? Just take what you have and all will be well. Yes, lots of firewood there but it will really look nice once they are bucked, split and stacked.
A well experienced feller (meaning tree cutter downer) for sure. Its always a pleasure to watch someone who really knows what they are doing. They make it look so easy. I noticed your stacks BTW, nice looking and well done MrWhoopee . Very cool processing area amongst the conifers. Reminds me of a campground here in CT we stay at that has Eastern White Pines that size.
Even for firewood, you need something to move the logs, maybe a larger saw and there is no time better than this to buy a small processor and build a new firewood shed. Speaking of sheds, Maybe the mill would be a good idea after all since you would now have a need for the lumber.
