Hi all! First time poster and newbie to wood burning. I picked up some free firewood just curious what type of wood it is. When I first picked it up I thought it was maple but doesn’t look like it after I split it. Anybody have any ideas it’s super easy to split and bark peels right off.
Welcome aboard 1985ew. I’m a newbie on FHC as well but I can vouch this forum when I say that is overflowing with wood junkies that have an amazing amount of knowledge to share! I’ll take a crack at your wood ID even though I’m hardly qualified to do so at this point. I’m sure the FHC will weigh in shortly and you have your answer for sure... I was gonna say silver maple but after looking st it again I’m going with poplar. Any leaf samples?
Welcome aboard 1985ew That certainly looks like ash to me. Great wood, splits easy, dries quickly. I burn a great deal of it here. You'll like the crowd here, and hear all about pics of wood, pets, equipment, you get the idea I'm sure.
Thanks guys super excited to be on board. I have split some ash already seems different and lighter not sure if that makes sense Hahahha. Unfortunately I don’t have any leaf samples guy that I picked up from said it blew over a few months ago.
Awesome! Thanks for the help guys really appreciate it! It’s been raining like crazy here started pouring when I was stacking yesterday.
Welcome aboard! Nearly perfect wood Free! Bark peeling off! And I agree Ash. Although I wood have said White Ash
Is there much difference in bark on white vs green? I know at the leaf cluster base it's different looking when you pull and look at the base. I think I have predominantly green here, but likely some white as well.
I don’t know. I said White because that’s all I really know. Never even heard of Green until reading it here. Here’s a couple Whites. We call them the goal posts.
Welcome to the forum 1985ew Great to have you on board. Lots of knowledge and humor here. I would say ash as well. The splits do look like poplar due to the greenish color. Did you split it by hand? Tulip (yellow) poplar in my back woods.
