Massive 118yr old + Oak base

Man, with an oak that large you could have made a solid oak table top if you had a planer. Did you save any big pieces for wood work?

 

The homeowner and I discussed that. The wood wasn’t solid enough to make a cookie (round) style table top. And I didn’t cut anything longer than about 18” so I could move it. It’s so heavy I wouldn’t have been able to lift them in my truck.

 

that s@#%s especially with a long bar. Chain saw of the future will have a sensor and stop the chain automatically if it detects metal. Sounds cool?!

Have you ever tried noodling horizontal while still on the log? I like it better

 

I’ll bet it will burn like coal once you get it seasoned.

 

You mean like milling(as in vid below)? That method is much slower and harder on your chain. Usually the cutters get filed at a less steep rate so they don't dull as quick. Check out a chain made for the mill(or ripping).

 

No, noodling, just going horizontal instead of vertical. Never hit the ground. Don’t have to roll the log to finish the cut. Noodles don’t clog up the saw when you get close to the ground.

 

Did you see the vids on pg1? That’s how I process big stuff. You can also see the vertical cuts in the log as it sits.

 

Yes. I was asking if you ever tried going horizontal instead. Or better yet on the big stuff, both.

 

So I started splitting some of this hoard. Man-o-man is this stuff premium! I can’t wait to burn it!


Today it’s just crazy hot and humid here in south central Pa. I need to get this processed so I broke out my own shade. Still sweating my arse off.

Looks like some premium quality firewood. How soon will you burn it? Was the tree already dead when felled? Did it seem as "green" as normal?
Nice touch with the instant shade. I can function in humidity, but the sun kills me. May split some oak in the later. Luckily its in the shade!

 

This tree uprooted and I have no idea how long ago. Definitely very wet but not green. I figure it’ll have to season at the least two years.
Second trailer load today. I’m taxing my body as much as I ever have. Working slow, drinking lots of ice water and taking breaks. Stacking row is in full sun and that is just punishing!

I just came in from working on my oak. Clothes seemed wetter with sweat than if i just took them out of the washing machine. T-storms held off so i was able to finish.

 

Looking good there. We work in conditions like that all summer. Make sure to drink plenty and get a fan. Try late in the evenings or early morning. Just be careful.

 

I sure did take it slow. Split 3 full trailer loads and had about 1/4 of one in the end. Quit at 5p and about 1/2 hour later the skies opened up. I just walked around in for a while, felt good!




Soooo, I guessed 2 cord earlier in the thread. Just did the calculation... 2.06.

 

Also had a chance to more closely count rings. 118!
