Haven’t logged on in a while. Hope everyone is having a good spring so far. Looks like lots of great wood fun and work happening amongst this crew. I haven’t been able to spend much time filling in the wood shed lately. Last full day I spent splitting was a Sunday in April. Got through my roadside scrounge pile that day. Still need about 3 more cord to fill the shed. Was finally able to chip away at some splitting a little last week. Got a seasons worth of hemlock, red cedar and pine kindling split and stacked inside. Did this last year where I stack it inside and place the basement dehumidifier next to it all summer long. Came out so dry last year. Stacked in three ATV trailer loads of mixed bag hardwood firewood. Shag, sugar maple, beech, black oak, black birch. Little bit of red cedar, too. All from out back on the property. Mostly smaller diameter trees that needed to come down in order to widen the new trail for ATV access. The shag hickory was 12” DBH. Big enough that I saved a 5 foot section from it and ran the Alaskan mill straight down the middle. The grain on it is almost hypnotic. Just beautiful. Friend of ours asked if I could take the hickory and combine it with some of the red cedar boards I milled last winter and make a bench for his fire pit. Thinking over how I want to make the bench. If it comes out well I’ll post some pics. Made some wood cookies out of a piece of oak from a tree I felled last winter. Going to use them in our wedding this October. Anyone ever use Pentacryl to help prevent cracking and splitting? Anyways. Hope everyone is sitting on a fat and happy pile of wood for next burn season. Stay safe.
Excellent! btw, beware of those planned October weddings. My wife and I planned one but she still ended up being a June bride! That was 57 years ago and we've never been sorry.
Solid work Woodsman . That slab is a beauty. I made a dehudidification cabinet to speed up the seasoning process last fall. Worked great on everything except oak. The oak would only give up water from the outer layers of the splits. Been thinking I would stack some wood in the basement where I’m already running a dehumidifier anyway. Glad to see that you have done this already and had good results. Do you leave the dehumidifier in continuous mode? Run fans? Etc?
You have a beautiful wood storage area, and a primo mix of trees in your woods. And yet you scrounge the roadsides! That bug is hard to kill.
that piece of hickory is hypnotic Woodsman. Gorgeous piece of stock as is the red cedar. I made oak cookies for my stepdaughters wedding last September...table centerpieces. Didnt use anything on them. Just sliced them shortly before the reception. I have never used pentacryl before. They had ceremony and reception at their log cabin home.
