I had given my number to a tree guy a while back and asked him to save my number for when he had oak or other hard wood available. He called and said that he was taking an oak down, and that he would put it at the curb of the property if I could get it this weekend.

Nice big oak rounds, filled my 18 foot trailer-

Great score for sure. Grab it cheap, stack it deep.

My thoughts exactly. Seems like they can cut it any size shape and length except the one you want? Unless VOLKEVIN cut it there?

Oh yeah there’s some bigguns in there. My back hurts just looking at em. I like em tho. Not a fan of bark. Excellent score of btu’s.

Around here the tree guys that burn wood themselves often do really well. The ones that don't, well see buZZsaw BRAD 's post above.

I think Ive gotten really lucky, everything was 18 inch pieces except for the crotch pieces and that last humongous round which was just under 40 inches across and 16 inches wide. I only had to show up and load it, didn’t cut anything. The only thing he asked of me was a picture that showed I had taken it all. I spoke to him afterwards, and he asked me if I got enough- what kind of question is that to ask a hoarder? I said “I’ll take all the hardwood you cut!” That was music to his ears, too. He said I can have first dibs on everything, and if I can’t get it due to travel schedule for work, he will just post that job on Craigslist. I hope this continues!

Nice load of oak. Looks like you both made mutual friends. Hope it continues as well.

looks like you made a great connection! Gooder for you! Are you able to take LARGE quantities of wood...ie dumping, storage, land etc?

Now that for sure was one to get and get fast! I hope you set aside some goodies for the fellow; he deserves something for that.

I can- I have a big covered pole barn that was a hog shed 20-30 years ago. I have my splitter up there, and have about 3 fresh cords outside to bake for the summer before I put them away for 2 winters from now. I also have a space where someone could also go in the barn drive and just dump logs or rounds, and I could get them with my tractor and take them up to the shed.
Once everything gets put away I’ll have a much more accurate count of how much wood I actually have, but between what has been put away over the winter, spring and summer, and what I have on the ground now in rounds I would say I have 9 cords. So, one more cord and I’ll be 2 years ahead. Then...start on year 3! If this tree guy turns into a consistent source for me, it will be really nice because I will have more than enough between him and my scrounges where I won’t worry about the type I am burning- i.e. I won’t separate and store by wood type, and then pick and choose shoulder season wood vs. deep winter wood, night wood vs. day wood etc. I’ll hopefully just have a whole lot of all oak, maple, hickory, walnut, etc.
Welllll, maybe I’ll still separate the locust and Osage Orange and cut into woodstove length pieces for the garage woodstove...nothing like firing that up next winter in the mornings and being able to enjoy a toasty garage quickly! :fire:

I totally agree, Backwoods Savage! There will be some libations in his future for sure.

I might be putting the cart before the horse, but I envision having enough to get on the 4 year plan, and then have additional wood available that I can use for possible bartering and charity. A few round bales of hay for my cattle during the winter, maybe some donating wood to elderly folks that could benefit...etc. Hypothetically If I got a trailer load every other week or even once a month, that would be 16-24 cords a year! I could do a lot of good with that, for myself and others. Hoard on!
