Walked a mile to grade school, 3/4 mile to junior high then a mile to high school until I got my license. Occasionally through 5th and 6th grade I would ride my bike.

Found the other school, Irondale (not ironton). Cute little school, realized I've been mixing up the High School with that school all these years

I've been remembering those days of walking to and from school. Unfortunately only about 1/4 of a mile was wooded so we were in the open so that wind hit us going to school and coming back home. I remember when they closed the school and we then got to ride a bus to go to a different school about 10 miles away. That was nice but still when the weather was nice that bus went right past our old one room school and we'd ask the driver to let us off there so we could walk home as it was still a long ride on the bus before he got to our place. We'd then race to see if we could get home before the bus got there. We usually didn't make it as we'd get distracted by something or someone. I know it was nice not having to bundle up like an eskimo before heading to school.

This would get the school district sued and the bus driver fired if he did this now-a-days!! Sometimes progress sucks!!
