My dad put this wall in sometime around 1952. Don't know where he got it. I'm pretty sure he scrounged it, loaded/moved/unloaded/moved and built the wall by himself. It has stood the test of time. It's ugly and I want it to be level up w/the lawn and put in some kind of veg. bed above it. ....so, here we go. Made a deal at HD for 288 blocks....2 pallets. They loaded them on my truck.....big bonus in labor there. Have never put a load like that on my truck....even w/fire wood. 3.1K#....yikes. But it did it. Two loads. Only had to go about 5miles. 48 trips from driveway to garden w/the cart. Got'a move the old....eventually to become garden dividers and a rock garden in the front yard. These stones have sat here for 60+ years. Got started this morning. 50' of wall begins w/a single stone. Made some good progress. I love the way it is going to look.
Looks good, I'll be doing something similar in the near future. Are you using any type of adhesive to glue everything together?
Thanks! I saw that on a Lowes DIY thing. Seems like over kill and added expense..... good for Lowes. I built a wall w/these kind of blocks at the last house. They never moved in 14 years. If that wall ever shifts, I will be having much bigger problems to deal w/than that. What is your project?
Getting into the rhythm of wall building...... Supervisor says chop...chop.....we're burning daylight. Move the old wall. Lay a base layer. Set the top stones. Move the old wall......starting to run out of gas for the day. Supervisor says this supervisoring is pretty hard work....and its hot.... better stop for the day. ....ok, you're the boss. Almost half way.
I love seeing it in my minds eye..... and then bring it into reality. Totally transforms the entire yard. Now, need to tweak the steps on the east end. Rebuild my irrigation pipe exits and a ramp on the west end. This retirement gig is really working out. I like it.
It looks great! Is it stepped back slightly? Hard to tell from the pics. Nothing beats working for yourself!
With further thought....yes. It is stepped back 3 3/4". Each block has a lip on the back/bottom that engages the block it is sitting on and locks it in place. That sets each block back 3/4".
Thanks! Really finished it off nice. Yes. Back fill. I'm thinking taking the removed stones and making a lining about a tiller width wide and plant stuff in there. Maybe a potato patch. ….next year.
