Lots of saw time for that size wood. Need a decent size bar too. Very labor intensive.

You know that big stuff is a lot of work, but I really enjoyed working on bigger logs. You can get a lot of splits out of one round.

Edit: I also cheated on that one though and had a Skdsteer to load it onto a trailer then haul it to my splitting area.

    It's Red Oak.

There were 2 rounds that were cut to 18 to 20"s that I decided to take. Well, it took a full size Caterpillar back-hoe tracker to tip them over, and hold up a few inches on one side so I could get my splitter under it in Verticle mode. It split no problem, andI said, great, now I can man-handle the 1/2's! WRONG! Still couldn't budge them, tracker helped again, and I quartered them. The qtrs, I could just barely budge (not move around) enough to slide the splitter under to 1/8 it. I think I got 1/2 cord from 2 rounds!!! Amazing, filled my entire full size F150 truck bed up, and bottomed out the shocks/springs, with "2 rounds"!!

Anyway, my 18" Echo ain't gonna get anywhere near thru them! I could cut in from all sides, and still not be able to reach the middle! So, I drove away defeated! And it's killing me thinking they are just laying there! ;)

Noodle them babies down to manageable size. I'd much rather mess with stuff that size than 20" or less.

Red oak should pop apart pretty easily with a maul, especially once in half. Would take much less effort than wrestling them into position on the splitter.

If I can't reach to cut across them with an 18" bar, how the heck am I going to noodle them with an 18" bar?? I'm still about 10" short of getting through it, and of course that is provided I have perfectly straight cuts on both sides, which would take me a minor miracle! ;)

Ain't hapnin. Instead, I got a couple small trees in the woods near my house to top off my racks. DONE till next March when I have burnt off some of the wood I have. I've got 9 cord split and stacked, including my two sheds already full with next winters wood. So I'm in good shape.

Noodle a series of vertical cuts from the end, then cut the slabs off from the sides.

To go a step further than Woody, noodle "X"s to where you have 12" sq by 17-18" long blocks when you cut them loose. Easier to handle & simple to split.
