That's probably how they survived long enough to get big!

Saw a nice little 2' garter snake at the garden center the other day, my mini-me (2.5 yrs) chased the poor thing all over the place trying to grab it. Funniest part was watching my mother chase her around trying to stop her! She's not a snake fan. Near mortal fear for little Ella's safety. Wife just stood by and laughed. I have discovered that even at the ripe old age of 37, I'm not too old to catch a whop on the back of the head from Mom. :)

King snakes are awesome, they’re the gangsters of the snake world. They actively hunt and kill copperheads and rattlesnakes.
I’m not overrun with snakes on my farm, but there’s several black snakes and rat snakes out there; and I don’t have a mouse problem either. I’m happy to have them! :handshake:

Easy identifier for baby copperheads: a bright yellow tail.

Found this young Eastern Hognose in the yard a few years back. Little fella played dead whenever you went near it. 20180918_115455.jpg

I don't spend anything on rodent control, outside of the occasional mouse in the basement which a sticky trap handles with no problems.

thanks VOLKEVIN ! Great identifier to look for. We live in a heavily wooded area with lots of rockledge so snake haven. Ive seen others around here which i though copperheads, but dont remember the tail being yellow. The only yellow thing was me!

I like snakes more than bugs and rodents, and my shop is next to a swamp but a couple of big hawks moved in and it's looking like the bugs are the only thing left.

Yeah their camouflage and our instinctive habits propel the whole narrative of an only good snake is a dead snake. If someone is overwhelmed with snakes they have a food source problem(rats chipmunk mice frogs) or a nearby winter den.

My kids would keep several toads each summer. We have a ball catching bugs and such to feed them. I think we had them all trained as they would all come back and sit by the terrarium waiting to get there turn again. They would keep about 4-5 at a time and swap them out for a different one once in awhile. And this is where I drew the line with Garter snakes. We came home from shopping one day to find about a 3 footer sitting on our steps with a big lump in his belly. Bugger ate one of the toads and the kids were pizzed. So any Garter snake near the house gets a not so gentle relocation assist.
