I head out Thursday morning and in the distance i hear a chain saw roaring. First thought was "wood score"! Later that day i drive by the power lines down the street and a tree service was trimming near them. Wood was too gnarly at a quick glance and it was raining pretty good so i didnt stop. I stopped today to check it out and cant identify the wood. Looks sort of like sassafras, but no smell. Weight, texture, and growth rings are reminiscent of sassy too. What do you think? Piece i took (on right) next to sassy half from the other day's score. Brush and logs where they trimmed that i left. The tree they trimmed. Branch structure reminds me of sassy as well split in two whacks, although Fiskars did embed itself on the first with no separation. End grain of the piece i took. Tree was living despite scar on this log.
The rough bark in your first pic is sass on the left and the one on the right looks like elm?. the pic of the topped tree near the lines reminds me of pin oak.
Looks like the southern catalpa I picked up a weeks ago. Bark strips off easy, splits easy, splits are dark when fresh, then fade to tan. Wood ID please? Should I get more?
Never gotten any for firewood. I know of one tree locally, so I know it's hardy here, but it's not prevalent. I remember it from Maryland, I used to love to crush the leaves for the smell.
I drove by this tree which turned out to be Catalpa (thank you Midwinter ) and it was blooming very nicely and had the "beans" developing as well. Second pic is same angle as photo from original posting.
