10 minutes ago, I put my Stihl BR600 blower up for sale on Craigslist. Within 2 minutes I get a text from a guy saying he will send a "local hauler" to inspect it and pick it up and he will pay with a cashiers check... Sheeze.... Are you kidding me?! Next text 3 minutes later is from a different guy saying his daughter is interested but she is deaf and asks me to email her.... What?!? Now a third contact, this one is an email asking me to text him because he is interested.. Why wouldn't he have just texted me or called me or asked any questions in his email? Isn't it strange that they want me to reach out to them when I have my cell number and email in the add? Makes me think this guy is a scammer too? Is this how my evening is going to go tonight and the next day....?? What happened to honest people asking a few questions, negotiating the price and paying for it?
Probably...it used to be the scammers only messed with the bigger ticket items...but of late I have had scammers even on $200 items. I always put in my ad to text or call me, if calling leave me a message, I'll call you back ASAP. If they text something goofy, I ignore them. And I've never had a scammer leave me a phone message yet...
I sold a stove years ago and the first message went something like this: I am wanting of your items. I will send a truck and my men's to pick it up. They wills bring a check with them for to purchase. I don't know what the scam was, but I deleted it. I was checking CL for stoves a few months later and I saw a listing for for a stove like the one I sold, and there was my pictures on someone else's listing. Don't know if it was legit or someone being too lazy to take pics.
My favorite one was trying to sell my daughter's first car. Guy emailed me that he would pay an extra 500s sight unseen but would be a whileto pick it up as he was in California working on a boat and wouldn't be back to shore for a few weeks. "I'll send you a check so you have the money and I'll be in touch to pick it up". My reply was please send ME YOUR BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER AND SSN, WE WILL GO FROM THERE. No reply, hmmmm.
The last scammer I had asked where to send the check...I said cash in person only...there was no reply...
I buy a fair amount off of crazylist. People seem shocked when I show up. Even more so when I have cash. The icing is that if they are asking a fair price I just say "your price is fair hears your money".
