Found this wood on the side of the road while working yesterday, most of it already bucked. I'm not too good at identifying but grabbed it anyways cause it was easy btus. Maybe elm or black locust? The inside of the bark was yellow and very soft, it also split relatively easily. The tree was just cut I believe.
bark reminds me of sassaras, but i dont think it is. Did it have a root beer aroma? Great score whatever it is. Another fellow CT hoarder . Im in North Haven, how bout you?
Anyone hear of black walnut ashes killing off plants when spread in the garden. I’ve heard warnings of its Allelopathic properties, but I didn’t know about how realistic the warning was.
Thank you all! Black Walnut it is. buZZsaw BRAD I'm also in North Haven, new to the hoarding game though.
Leaves lots of fluffy ash, open door slowly after burning. Don't know about the ashes, but the roots secrete juglone, which deters or stops most plant growth in their vicinity.
I have learned the hard way to make sure you keep it dry, top covered was a disaster for me. The wood dried eventually during the three year plan however it becomes a hateful mess if it stays moist. The bark starts to rot and you get black dirt everywhere and it’s hard to get out of clothes and especially the carpet which = angry wife
As a hoarder the right answer should always be "yes". But right now I'm about at my capacity for what I can stack in my back yard and I still have about a half a cord to process.
I understand. I turned down a decent score last week and still have the guy's contact info. Back up, cut and load silver and sugar maple less than 3 months cut, but lots of noodling though. It was in North Haven and i'd be glad to work with you on it if you were interested NBNH Sorry, i had transposed your user name letters in my last post! If you are ever looking for wood, shoot me a PM.
