This is some pictures of some maple I brought home today. No way would it split with the grain! It came off of a really pretty big tree, noticed some one had tried to get some of it, but gave up, lol I might go back, take the 044 with me, and give it a try myself. Who ever tried it last used a power saw to "split" it last time. Notice the middle picture, the splitter head sliced it's way through the wood? Pretty gnarly stuff. Wish I had about 10 cords of it...
Oh my! What a muzzle loader stock that curly maple would have made! Its a shame how much beautifully figured wood wines up in a wood stove for fuel. But that's okay, the trees keep making more of it, for now anyway.
Your right, funny i was thinking the same thing when i was splitting it!! And, i've got 2 of them 50 and 54 cal.
Set that pretty stuff aside. Don’t know if your into woodworking but someday you might be. I once made jewelry boxes out of a solid block of wood just to see if I could and what would happen as far as warp. Apple. Came out nice and never twitched a bit. PIA but was fun and educational. Knife handles, pistol grips. You’ve got some small but beautiful pieces there.
