Thanks guys, the water oak and red oak bark is similar in looks. the inside is different. water oak is more white and doesn't smell as bad. It also is not as good of firewood as red oak. but when it's free, i'll take it.lol
Ah ha! Another one who doesn't like the scent of red oak. Have you ever had the pleasure of smelling pin oak?
Oh yeah, but I actually like the smell of red oak, It is kinda rank when green but it gets better with some age.I know it means some warm heat and savings on Propane.
I once got 12 healthy half ton loads from the top of one oak tree. I had to noodle some of the branches so 2 guys could get them on the truck.
Nice work Stihl! It sure looks good when its finished and stacked. I'm still working to get the final few tops cleaned up from 120 big ones downed in 5/12! Most of it is stinky red oak, now starting to get punky on the outside!
I just split and stacked half of it, no pics though. was tryin to beat the storms but ran out of gas first. I'll get a pic on the next go round, but it's supposed to rain for the next three days off and on.
That tree must have/had a bruiser of a main trunk - makes the limbs I'm cleaning up from my white oak look like twigs
3rd load, not a full one, I have already split one truckload a while back and didn't take pics. also my helper for the day.
Lotta work there SS. If I worked in 85 heat like that I'd........... be skinnier than I am tappin on this computer all the time...
