The last weekend, i had my firewood workers stay overnight for turkey hunting. After getting in mid-mrning, one of the girls asked to have a fire in the fireplace. She hadnt started a fire before and jumped right in, following my directions. I explained how seasoned firewood is very important to a nice fire. We got into a euchre game, i would add another stick to the fire , i would remark "see that? See how the wood just takes off? That's what happens with good seasoned firewood! " After about the fifth time, they and my wife just smiled at each other. I think i wore out my education moments, but now they know! The girls didnt get any turkies but they saw and heard some. they enjoy coming to the country, and have simple pleasures. Rarely looking at their phones. And now they know how to start and maintain a fireplace.
Ahh yes, one must remember the audience. Did ya notice if there was an "eye roll" or two? You aren't the first to be sure, and will likely not be the last. So that's something.
Dont feel bad, Sourwood id be guilty of the same, but instead of playing id be sitting staring at the fire! Us FHC guys like to share our knowledge for sure!
Sourwood .. next time they come over and they're outside. Let them try to start a fire with wet wood.. After they struggle a bit, give them some dry.. And say nothing!! I preach also, I've learned letting them struggle is easier than talking
I'll add my name to the list too. I don't do it as much lately though. I like CbVT's idea of giving them the tools to figure it out.
