Another year, another roadside scrounge pile to go through. Started chipping away at my roadside pile. Splitter is back up and running ... and hungry. Wood shed is even hungrier! Nice to be back in the game. Big mix of hardwoods - oaks, black birch, beech, sugar maple. Little bit of red cedar as well. Got a little hemlock to split through. Making flat splits with it as it’ll become kindling.
Love black birch - I've run a bunch of it through the owb, but not yet indoors. gonna have to find me some and get after it! Nice looking toolshed and woodshed! Looks like a great place to get er done.
Nice looking wood Woodsman Something to be said about roadside Connecticut wood! Im surprised you didnt mill the red cedar? Was it you who did that recently?
Haha seriously... I feel like the power line clearing crews are always cutting something nearby. And yep, milled some cedar. The stuff in the pile today was the smaller pieces from those mill days. Actually, that cedar is the only wood I split today that came off the property. Everything else was roadside scrounged.
I was on Wilbur Cross parkway today Woodsman and the state has cut in both directions in North Haven and Hamden. Tempted to go get a load as it was easy access and looked like primo wood, but ive got a few other scores ongoing. I have s few bigger red cedar logs that i dont want turn into firewood. Ive never milled with a chain saw before. Is it hard to do? How thick were the slabs?
That’s awesome. The chainsaw mill is easy enough to figure out an operate. However, getting good cuts it’s definitely a game of patience and a skill earned though experience. There’s just lots to think about as you’re running the mill down the log. Slabs are 1 1/4” thick. I’m still so new to it so lots to learn yet. Next milling adventure will be a length of cherry from a tree that’s coming down soon.
Will you dry the cedar then run it through a planer Woodsman ? What are you plans for it? Some gorgeous stock for sure!
