Another score from my tree service contact.....Black Cherry & Black Walnut this time!!

Seen his ad on CL about 2PM this afternoon,he placed it barely 30 minutes earlier.

Said "Sure Jon,I'll bring ya some!" I figured he'd bring it by between 5 & 6,after the day was done.About 330 I heard front doorbell ring,went out on porch "Hey Jon,we got your wood.How've you been,hadnt talked since February?"


The walnut is great,up to 15-16" diameter,some pieces over 5' long! The Cherry is bigger - main trunk is up to 25" but most of that bigger part is riddled with holes unfortunately.But will get lots of blocks/slabs from the 12" to 20" logs,those are pretty good for the most part.No trouble to cut the sound blocks out of them.And lots of small 3" to 7" rounds for the smoker/other outdoor cooking. Easily 3 p/u loads total,guessing 50% of it will be burned eventually,remainder cut into future woodworking stock....

Ya, good looking wood - both of ' em. Like to see a few finished products sometime in the future. Got my mouth watering with talk of the smoker. Good catch!

Cut up/split/stacked most all of the smallest stuff,quit for the night.About 2 wheelbarrow loads roughly.First thing tomorrow I'll be back at it,sorting as I go.

I've noticed he's been real busy so far this Spring,compared to last couple years.About a dozen ads placed in past 3 weeks.3 or 4 Silver Maples & a couple Ash last week,a big Boxelder on Monday (almost kicked myself for not calling him on that,though I was wanting Cherry/Walnut more),2 big old White Oaks on south side of town on Tuesday.

As of this morning,that oak was apparently still sitting in homeowner's front yard,he placed another ad on Wednesday telling people if they wanted it they can pick it up any time.He only deletes the ad after all the wood from that person's yard is gone,either by you picking some of it up or him delivering it.He only delivers full dump trailer loads later on that day,if you want a smaller amount,he lists the address so you can pick & choose what size of wood you want.Most people only want the smaller easier to split logs with no knots/crotch grain or gnarly pieces.I take whatever he brings,will normally request the biggest he has however.

 

Its a constant battle - the artist in me is looking for how much raw material I can get for future woodcraft/cabinetry/woodturning projects,the practical side is wondering how much winter heat all those logs will produce.....

 

Sounds to me like the best of both worlds...

 

Well , either way , you have to dry it.
