View attachment 208087 I made a trip to the compost center (dump) for a yard of topsoil today. Made a raised bed in the backyard for the GF's garden.
I pull in and drive over to the big pile of dirt and park. The guy on the payloader was busy helping other customers so i walked over to the brush pile to see what wood was there. OMG, the most ive ever seen there and i cant take any. No room for wood as i was getting dirt.
Dont know what the sadder sight was...a FHC guy practically in tears :( or the pile of wood to be turned into chips and not firewood.
So the guy comes over and im on the verge of telling him to get the defibrillator. I ask about wood and he says i cant take any. He loads my dirt and then tells me to come back at 3. He'll lock the gate and i can cut and take a truckload....WOW was i shocked at that. Wasnt planning on it and didnt think id have time.
I get home, assemble the bed, fill with dirt, fill the other new flower bed, the whole time ive got firewood on the brain (which, as i understand, is a common affliction among FHC members!) It was 230, made room on the PU and went back, thinking he may never offer again. Pull in at 3, he locks up and in 35 minutes i cut and loaded a truck full. Someone had come after i left the first time and dumped a load of mostly dead ash 6-12" rounds in lengths which made up about half the load. I cut ash, sugar maple (the bark was off but tree wasnt dead) even some shag...scarce scrounge for me. IMG_0181.JPG
    IMG_0170.JPG IMG_0171.JPG IMG_0172.JPG
this pile was buried when i came back. Type of logs ill usually take when hes not looking. IMG_0173.JPG this pile was mostly Eastern White Pine.208087[/ATTACH] IMG_0175.JPG IMG_0176.JPG not bad for an hour round trip including load time. Maybe half cord. IMG_0179.JPG piece of tulip poplar i took just to say ive split some.

i didnt process any of it mrfancyplants . Just unloaded and sorted it. Dunno if ill go back tomorrow when it closes.
Not on the ten year plan LOL!!! Ive hoarded three times as much wood as i normally have. Seems every time i turn around more wood comes my way and as a dedicated hoarder i cant say no! Ill sell off the extra next Winter to make room for more.

You poor city folk buying dirt:whistle:
In Winter farmer dumps manure and wood chips in a pile quarter mile down the road for me. After a year I go take the FEL and bring two yards up for the wife.

He says he does it because the neighbors that have to smell it should be able to use it..

trust me Canadian border VT, i hate paying for dirt...let alone anything else! There is a nice spot in the woods where, in heavy rains, the topsoil washes onto the trail. I have to take the wheelbarrow and sifter to get it. Its MUD central down there now! Last June it was nice and dry and i didnt need much. I think it took 12 wheelbarrow fulls to fill the bed. Wouldve taken me a few hours to get that much. The stuff i bought was pretty muddy too, but nice and black. You shouldve seen my PU when he dumped it in.

sorry i misunderstood your question mrfancyplants. The piece pictured was how i picked it up. Someone evidently split it first to load and bring there.

You got it so you could see what it is like to split but haven’t split it yet?

I’ve taken to splitting at our community log dump before I load it up in my trunk. That way I leave a lot of the mess out of my yard.. don’t kill my back lugging whole rounds.. and don’t get stuck with any more rounds that I am unable to hand split. I have a few rounds sitting around that are tenacious due to branching or just being made of cement like wood.

I am a rookie, but slowly figuring out my method for my madness.

I picked up another trunk full of mostly yellow poplar this morning when I went to fill up my gas can for this weekend. I couldn’t have the gas can rolling around in the trunk, and it is just so easy to split.

Looks like a tree service dumped that. If an enterprising individual could stake out the place or ask a few questions, I bet they could find out who it was and let them dump for free on his lot..

i asked the guy at the dump Canadian border VT and he said it was a triaxle. Almost looks like two loads to me. Dump guy didnt seem to enthusiastic as i guess it makes for more difficulty in grinding it up. Ive been there when a a load (F350-450 dump) comes in and he says go ask the guy if he'll dump it at my place. Problem there is i live on the other side of town and the next town down, my processing area is small and on landlords property. I'd like to be the "enterprising individual" BigPapi , trust me!

Understand buZZsaw BRAD .. Here most tree companies cut the trees and bring them to their loading area. When they're slow time happens in the winter. They keep their guys busy by processing the logs into firewood.. in Vermont 25% of the population Burns wood. And where I'm at it's closer to 75%. So firewood and logs.. are definitely at a premium..

I am happy for you guys it's just unheard of up here!

i wonder what the percentage is in this area of Southern Conn that burn wood...and i mean for heat and not the "casual burner". Our winters are mild compared to what you folks get up there!

Lots of burners in my area, but "town" is only a dozen miles up the road, so plenty of yard trees to be had if a guy is quick. Only wood I've ever scrounged at the dump was willow. Lol - Easy free wood is easy free wood. :)
