Well, its the 23rd of April already. Don't need the big wood for the all night fire's, so, i go down town every now and then and scrounge up some wood pallets , from one of the stores i frequent here in town. At times i'll save some of the really good 4 ft 2x4's just in case i need a couple. Then i take the Stihl 193 T, with the ''big'' 14'' bar on it, and cut the pallets up for evening wood, or morning wood. Saw them all into mostly 12-16 inch pieces, for a quick but, small fire. I've got a jackson construction sized wheelbarrow and about 3 pallets will fill it up, when they are cut down. I build a fire in the evening to take the chill off, and i'm up a lot around 2 Am, or 3 am, for a couple of hrs so, i build a small fire if its cool that time of the morning also. Works GREAT! And, every now and then, get a hard wood pallet. Been doing this for 3-4 yrs now, helps the guy out at the store, by taking them off his hands, and helps me to be able to put in a small fire. I don't normally take all he has, i try to leave a couple, so, some one else might be able to use them. I also pick out the really good one's, and stack my wood on them as well.
I used to do that years back B.Brown with my late father, but mostly now to stack wood on. I do business with a wholesale sheet metal company. They get metal deliveries on the 3'x8' hardwood pallets made from oak and sugar maple. The rails are full 2"x4" and cross pieces are full 1"x6". Very heavy. Ill grab some when i have room in the truck. I use my circular saw to cut them. Seems there is always a nail playing hide and seek and my chain finds it. Dontcha love the noise it makes when it hits the nail! My GF's mom is elderly but will start a fire now and then so i gave her some of it as its easier for her to handle than regular logs. We've actually taken it camping too!
Oh, the nails! yeah, i feel your pain. I had just filed the chain on the 193T the other day, hit a hidden, off center nail right off. I try to check the pallets prior to cutting them up, but, this one was put in at a angle, so i caught it. Actually it didn't hurt the chain that bad. Staples are another bad thing, but, at least they cut through a little faster. lol. I used to use a skill saw to cut them up as well, guessing a saw'z all would be the best thing, with a metal cutting blade on it of course. Burning some of the pallet right now as i type this. Its cool/windy out right now, but, those smaller pieces of pallet wood work perfect, just to take the chill off.
B.Brown i used to do a lot of business with a local lumberyard and would scrounge a pallet of two whenever i was there and truck was empty. One time i got a mahogany pallet. I didnt have the heart to cut it up and burn it so i carefully took it apart, made an adirondack chair out of it and gave it to my GF at the time.
