I get a lot of smaller hop hornbeam that die and fall over, the wood is always still solid, even after a few years. If it's solid enough, I take the root ball too, that's always good for a long burn in the fire pit or overnight in the wood boiler.
Wow! You have a nice ramp patch there! Looks like they are still young but should be digable in a week or two. Dead predried wood is awesome!
I have 25 acres, but I “manage” 25 acres on each side of my property also. There is an auction coming soon with another track unit for anyone interested.......
Low BTU's or not I like iron wood as it does make heat. I am far from being a wood snob. I was just thinking about some iron wood this morning to make some wood bearings I need, Man that stuff drys hard. Also love the Ramps ours poped last week try to leave the roots by cutting rhe bulb just above them. I found a shortened fillet knife works well for doing that. Al
Hows that thing doing in the wet conditions this spring? Looks like it is not tearing up the ground at all!!
As long as you drive straight, it does not hurt the ground at all. It was one of my pros in the decision process since my tractor and gator wreck the woods in spring and fall wet periods. Plus, I can get pretty much anywhere now!!!
Got out my handy little bucking tool and cleaned up the entire load of iron wood. Best little helper I have for ten inch minus logs. Ground of some of the bracket years ago, but with a little common sense it works great. Strapped the 310 on it. Hard cutting with the dry ironwood. That wood is premium and went into fall 2019 stacks!!!!
Is that your own invention Woodsnwoods ? Nifty gadget for sure. The dead ironwood reminds me of when dad and i would cut small dead dogwoods from his woods years back. They were mostly under 4" but hard as a rock and could be burned right away
